Depending on your insulation, perhaps on a timer to use electric night units, if you are on a day/night meter.

IME it's not the upper end of the temperature that was the issue - it was the lower end. I could only find a heater that goes down to 16 degrees.

If using a glass aquarium heater make sure it's potected from the koi and won't get broken by the fish or the pond user by accident.

The consequences of a broken heater are self explanatory.

Matt is right

When Gazza used these, he had them installed in a piece of old pipe with lots of holes drilled in it, so that no Koi could bash against the actual heater.

Do they not come with a protective casing made of plastic??? Mind did it snaps together and heater goes through the middle.

Hi Andy

In a true QT you want to be able to have full control of the heat, whatever the outside temps.

Presume this is in the garage or a shed?

Insulation and a cover will help but if you want to get to and sustain say 26 degrees in the middle of winter then you may need to think a bit bigger, maybe even up to 1kw depending on the insulation etc. Maybe a couple of 300W units may do the trick, best to get them in an area where there is some flow, U could put them in a tube and then have an airstone below pumping some water through?

Ed - would love to find a small cheap aquarium heater that has a stat that goes lower than 16 - if you see one then shout!!

Regards

Best I found was the Jaeger heater but only goes to 16. It's supposed to be very efficient too and heat a lot more water than other 300W heaters. 2 are certainly kept my QT at 16 during this recent cold snap - it's 18 now so they're not on much if at all!
