Where do you keep your stuff

Post by Gazza »

Hi Guys,

So we all have a fair arsenal of stuff and what with all the different chemicals and potions and lotions we have i just wondered where you keep yours and is there any thing in particular you do with any of them.

You know like antibiotics in the fridge or freezer as some make them up and freeze them.

Is there a benefit on keeping some stuff in the fridge or is it better in the freezer ?

How about some of the liquids we use keep them in cool dark place or even the fridge ?

Hi Gazza

My formaline is in the utility room with my microscope where it's warm and dry, and a tub of Koi Clear lives in the fridge (as advised on the label).

Everything else (anaesthetic, Mercurochrome, Lock and Seal, Gentian Violet, PP, CT, Malachite Green, Cauterizer) is in a tuppaware box on a shelf in the garage - perfectly dry, but pretty cold in the winter! Don't know if that's the best place for them, but I hope someone will tell me otherwise if it's not! :D

Cheers

Hi Gazza;

Most of my stuff is in an old fridge in the garage unless otherwise specified on the label........ most of our stuff is happy at 6 degrees which is what the fridge is set at.
The labels normally say store at room temp. Room temp is defined as zone 2 for storage i.e. 6 - 25 deg C.

Reconstituted antibiotics or even liquid antibiotics broadly don't like to be frozen. Some, mainly the ureidopenicillins (ampicillin etc) do keep when frozen for about 5 days and probably up to 10 days but there is little data. The don't do any harm on the whole if frozen but the potency and therefore efficacy drops of if frozen for longer. The reason I know is that I used to work for various pharmaceutical companies that made them for 25 years.

Good morning all.

With a new pond bild going on and filter house i'll be making sure i have plenty of room inside for a Koi medication area. I shall be looking at a fridge and also some a lockable cupboard to stop little hands getting in ;)

Would be good to see a list of stuff that should be in a cool area or a cold area.

Regards

Hi Gaz, All my stuff dry goods and wet are all kept neatly  on shelves in the qt/ treatment room (the converted garage). There is a bench on which the koi are treated and another bench with the microscope on , a tv/video combi above the qt tank that the scope is connected to , to make slide viewing easier and tape anything on these slides that I need to ,antibiotics are kept in the fridge. :D

Hi Gazz

All mine are in a Alumium tool box which is on a shelf in my filter house, the filter house is kept at between 50-60 degrees all year round.

two things you should keep warm-ish ( circa 10-12 c) and no lower are formaldehyde and 2-phenoxyethanol

although the freezing point for formaldehyde is -97c at cold temps paraformaldehyde forms (toxic)

2-phenoxy freezes or solidfies above zero at around 8 c if this occurs just bring it indoors place it ina bowl of warm water for about 5 minutes its will liquify again with no loss or degridation of product

obviously for powders absolute dryness is paramount and they will last you years

salt another one that MUST be kept dry not the damp will hurt it, but salt is highly hydroscopic and you will be weighing out moisture in your dose and therefore your dose will be inaccurate

anti's in the fridge

the rest should be fine in your work box
