In the dark!

Post by m4koi »

Due to the really cold weather i have had to put a thick nylon cover over my pond to try and keep some heat in but am affraid that the koi will not take to kindly to being in the dark day after day, will it do them any harm to be in the dark for a couple of weeks?

i have asked for help with a source of clear polycarbonate roofing sheets on a seperate post to try and resolve the issue.

I don't think it will do them any harm being in the dark as they live most of their lives on the bottom of murky waters in the wild!

However, I'd suggest you lift the cover for an hour or so every other day to let the stale gases escape.

Cheers

Thanks for the reassurance, the cover is a woven material so probably won't be that good at keeping the heat and gases in but worthwhile lifting it just in case!

hi
they will be ok.i cover my ponds with kingspan sheets so they live in the dark for weeks if not couple of months. now and again i move one sheet for a few hours during the day.they will tend to hide in the darkness though only to come up for food.
i know they dont look pretty but being 3 and 4 inches thick im sure they keep the heat in the pond better than polycarb sheets.ive not noticed any colours fading either

Kingspan does sound a good idea, 4" thick should be self supporting too! Thanks
