Timer on skimmers

Post by canveykoi »

Hi all, at our last meeting it was discussed that a member had read that timers on skimmers was a bad idea, I have 2 skimmers on my pond with no baskets fed by an oase 16.000 to a sieve. The timer is set to come on for an hour at a time, 3 times a day. Am i doing more harm than good by using timers ??? as i dont really fancy running the pump all day especially withe all the other electrics used on the pond

Canvey,
There`s the old expression springs to mind, "don`t believe everything you read".

All sorts of people post all sorts of opinions and theories, some good, but an awful lot bad. The first question I would ask when being told that `something had been read`, is who is responsible for the original writing. The second question would be, is this person credible and somebody I have respect for.

In your case, I wouldn`t think you are doing too much wrong. A lot of people nowadays seem to have a lot of their ponds filtration running through the skimmers for some reason, and of course, turning the skimmers off would then cut the amount of filtration that their pond gets. Providing that you have enough `normal` iltration on your pond, it shouldn`t make much difference if you put timers on your skimmers or not.

In the last month I have put my skimmer on a timer to run between 6am and 6pm only. This way I cut down on electricity as the pump on the skimmer is a Sequence 13,000, and I also don't circulate colder water from the pond surface during the coldest part of the day. I can't see any disadvantages at all to doing this.

In my view it would depend on the context the advice was given in. It seems such a blanket statement that it can't be wrong for all situations.

You would have to take into consideration your specific situation to see if it would not be good to turn off the skimmer.

leaves, bugs, pollen etc land on your pond all the time and often sink within minutes, with a skimmer on all the time you remove this before it settles in the pond and begins to decompose. If you only use the skimmer for appearance rather than water quality turn it off otherwise IMHO leave it on 24/7 especially this time of year with leaves falling
