Okies this is linked to my Pond build 2nd time around, will be doing QT first - aiming to have something set by beginning of Jan at latest, so I can actually let myself go look at some fish .
Anyway... this is a little complicated, but will try and be as clear as I can. Have plan and pics ready to post but thought better explain a couple of things first.
You will see from a pic that I am going to be using what is really a tiny house.... a 1 up 1 down.... it has electrics, and if you look at the Pond build thread you will catch a glimnpse... it is situated very close to the gate just across the little path from where Filter 1 [now will be ALL the filters] is marked on the plan. I will be using it to also run all electrics from and housing any heating and uv in there for main pond.
The 'upstairs' extends further back and out... it provides the ceiling for a downstairs toilet and utility room for washing machine etc. The upstairs is sort of like an attic and think I have included pic of the rafters heh. It is totally waterproof in there, and the 2 windows are double glazed heh... and the door is a proper lockable door like you might have for your side door on a double glazed home. Saying that because I just thought about heating, so was brain rambling that I should at least have a good enviroment for that.
Anyway here's another peculiar thing [as if the existence of this brick built double glazed mini house wasn't enough] There is a WATER TANK.... the water is fed from roof gutters into the tank via pipe and there is an overflow to waste... PLUS on the ground floor is a tap that sticking a hose on you can use the water... NOPE I am not on a water heater... The water in the tank is RANK and about 3/4 of the way up... what is certain is that it and the little house on the garden [ hmmm could be a long running tv show coming up]... are totally waterproof and draft free... I have tested it in my deck chair... sorta.... .
Phew okies hope the above helps explain stuff before you look at pics... Now, do I go with my downstairs QT Tank... or upstairs... am thinking that I should have 2... but 1 at a time heh... The upstairs tank is 200 galls - so thinking that with filters should be about that. Anyway, filtration wise on either [or eventually both] am thinking static k1 vortex and then home made shower all my OWN idea [cough... NOT... thanks Gazza ]. Have a couple of things I am hoping you can advise on but on with the pics....
##### NOTE TO ADMIN : I have been uploading a few pics and doing more now... if this is excessive please let me know and will put links to online album instead - sorry I didn't think of this before will send PM after posting ####
First 2 Pics are the outside of my Little House on The Garden.... Puts its relation to my planned Pond from other thread...
This one is still downstairs showing alcove tap pipework to right and the tank sitting above end of alcove... if you are wondering what it is sitting on its like railway line and has been checked and passed safe and all good....
Okies... hope the pics helped explain my probably confusing explanation heh... anyway off to grab coffee then will ask questions and hope for divvine guidance here
GAZZA! You are a star mate you replied already Gonna grab a coffee then hope you can give me some more advice I think 200 galls isn't really enough - I would have liked around 400 really, but thinking water tank would be much easier to set - and then can mess with other for a second something over 300 and use filtration from it into main pond via skimmer when its not in use and only using 200 one? Sheesh am asking already... coffee and be right back have more practical questions heh.
Dig through the concrete floor ho ho ho. BOO! I was only thinking if the extra filtration was sitting there and not being used was an option... wouldn't use QT facilities on maon pond if I had fish in quarantine... if they goto main pond then they take whatever they have anyway?
Ok I went to the little house to see why I stopped at bottom tank where I did, its because of the door not opening enough for me to get in but... I can extend another 18" and open it over half way which is fine so that gives bottom tank around 400 galls which is about my ideal.
Ok construction.... downstairs... I was thinking insulation like polystyrene or kings whatever it is... sandwiched to wall with plyboard - where no wall plyboard insulation plyboard sandwich, same with floor. Attach liner to outer plyboard and wall? Can I attach it to the wall ;/ with plyboard sandwich have the plyboard there to tack liner over lap onto... may have to do plyboard over walls too? Make a sort of free standing tank built in situ though tightly to walls?
Water Tank upstairs... should be easy to flush it clean and then close off incoming water pipe from gutters.... not sure how I would attach liner though ;/ Also think would need to check very carefully for any tank sharp edges and lag it to make sure it didn't rub through at some point. Possible to flush and clean and then seal the tank with something and then just use as is?
Drains... was thinking tommy drain on bottom tank anyway, would it work with the water tank do you think?
I think that these are my options or would you do something else? Think I have already said planning to use vortex static k1 and diy showers for filtration... room for the filtration isn't a problem up or downstairs.
Anyway... thats it... and I am so looking forward to posting pics of something completed heh.
Sounds like a plan and 400gln is cool and will do the job and you can grow a few little ones on it there
I built mine in the corner of my shed using plywood and a uni strut frame work to help with the strength so it is plywood then the metal uni strut then plywood and in the middle i have Kingspan for insulation. If you can put a bottom drain is i have a 2" bottom drain and slopped the bottom of the tank so any waste makes its way down to the drain nice and easy as we want to keep them as clean as we can.
Not sure on the other tank do you think you will need another one if not spend more money on the bottom one and get some BHM for the shower
Thanks Gazza that sounds good. 2" Bottom drain siunds good but will lose depth if it goes underneath why was thinking Tommy Drain on side - will ponder. Had a look on ebay and saw omething with the tag 'no more plywood' sounds umm magical heh. To get best out of space [alcove] will need to build in situ, practicalites of that making me think right now... can put boarding in there and make a tank even with my limited skills methinks... thing that is hurting my brain is how to fix the liner... once outter board is up then it would be flush to alcove area - not sure how well attached it needs to be 'over the lip' maybe the pressure of the water in tank works to help keep it fixed rather than pulling it off... my brain hurts ;/.
Gonna go with bottom tank, upper tank can go into reserve for when I try and raise some fry which is gonna be prob 2 years + after main pond is up and running so well down the road. Did raise fry before not very successfully think I made the mistake of leaving a couple of cannibals supplementing their diet heh.
BHM is horribly expensive, so will be for future... sheesh remember spenind fortunes for a good amiunt of siporax... tiny box was around a tenner a time - will get to it in time.
Thanks for input, can now start getting supplies and start on the QT tank.
