hi, im fairly new on here, been reading loads of posts though over the last few months.
i am about half way though my new pond build and was just wondering if you think my filter setup i am planning on will work.
the pond is around 1330g with bottom drain 4ft under ground and about 1.5ft above ground, so bassically i have managed to get 3 vortexs for free (thanks dad) so what i was thinking of doing was to run it something like this.
will this work?? will it be to much flow though the vortexs??? not enough though the shower??? vortexs will be filled with probably jap mat in one fluid/static k1 conversion on another. well any help or advice will be much appriciated thanks.
Welcome to Koi Quest and please don't forget the pictures we love pictures
I think this will work and have a look around at vortex modifications to k1 and then run static K1 in first chamber then fluidised K1 and then matting. You could go to a shower from there but i think the flow will be a bit slow.
thanks for the fast reply, i hadent decided on the shower media yet, maybe just alfagrog or something, i am a marine and trop keeper and complete new to koi filteration so any info would be cool. this koi world is a complete different thing from a glass box in me living room lol
Well sounds like you will be just the guy to keep Koi with your experience as i am sure you already know water and good water is the key
A few things to think about (which you probably already know) try to make the pond to the best size you can so you don't want to dig it up and start again in 18 months time.Ideally a koi pond needs to be deep enough to help them have enough room to grow and to keep the temperature stable if not heated. You also want as much filtration as you can to handle the koi which can eat lots in the warmer weather and of course also have a lot of waste so good mechanical stage to remove the waste and this is where static K1 works a treat.
Showers are great and without doubt there are lots of different media to go in them and BHM (which is expensive) is about the best and can just be put into a shower and left. One thing is if they are outside they will chill the water down so again another thing to think about if heated or not.
i am sure you have seen some set ups and filters but if you have the time see if you can get out to see some set ups and i am sure some if us here on Koi Quest will be more than happy to show you our set ups if we are local to you
Thanks mate you been a great help.
Bhm is whatvi will aim for then in the tower, my pond is already as big as I can go, I have a pretty small garden, the block work was completed the weekend so I am just about to level the bottom up as when we concreted we went a bit low at one end which is a bit of a pain.
You are right in saying I know a bit about water quality, although I no how to achieve it in a tank, the methods and medias in a koi setup are new to me so I am just making sure I get it right first time.
It would be good to see other setups around me and and also meet koi keepers in and around my area, I am from Wiltshire. Thanks again for the advice.
