Turn over rate and oxygen saturation.

Post by Russ Little Pond »

Does a high or low turn over rate have any influence on oxygen saturation ?

Is it better to have an even spread of air to pond and filters (k1) or have lots in K1 and a bit in pond for circulation ?

Thanks Russ.

I wondered that too, how long does the O2 stay in the water if put into the filters alone?

Hi Russ,

It would depend on the filter system you are using and flow rate, take a Bakki Shower with a big turnover this will give you loads of turnover and plenty of oxygen as well as gassing off all going on at the same time.My shower has two 16,000 lph pumps so you can imagine this has a large turnover in fact my 4500 pond probably turns over every 45 minutes or so.

The main thing is if you want a bigger turnover is to make sure your not pulling water through a filter system to fast so it can still perform correctly so many people have a couple of filters to help increase the pond filtration and turnover.

Gazza:As I understand it it is very difficult to have to fast a flow through a filter of aerated k1 for example, the bugs grab what they ant as it passes through.

Russ: I think if you mean have you got enough air going in is to try putting the air in the filter only then take a pond sample next day and test for O2...
Then you could try half and half to see if there is a difference although may be hard to tell till the water warms up as holds less then.

Still not sure though how long O2 stays in the water???
