just curious about it being the bee all and end all of media?
I was skipping through but sounded like floating bits of jap mat cut into squares...... then I went to bed :)

I have to extend my filtration anyway and am thinking of trying at least the first part of Waddy's filter. I like the idea of a small (125 litres) 1st bay with brushes that I can "dump" every day. This must surely keep the pond cleaner.

Answers, thoughts on a post card please

I`d first like to know what has been printed in Waddy's book before making any assumptions. In the meantime as I dont know the full picture I will reserve my thoughts.

I certainly agree with Waddy's points around the 3/4" pipe from the bio chamber of certain filter systems. I own a nexus which has this issue although I would have to check the bottom of the biochamber to check if there is indeed a problem with waste in the bottom.

I would however personally consider a bakki shower first before using waddy's design, I personally am not qualified to say if one is better than the other however I can say that people buy the system that suits their own personal needs whether that be for easy maintenance, small footprint or costing for example. There isn't a be all and end all solution for filtration however it is agreed that some systems work better than others.

I think there are bigger issues behind this article than that of filtration.......

What, like a campaign for World peace or how to avoid another global economic collapse?

I think I'd go for the bakki shower option as well; in fact I'm saving my pennies for it at the moment

got bored after about three lines. Save Your pennies and buy a Bakki Shower, in My experience they are about the best filtration around, and work in perfect harmony with a Nexus or pod.

so if I have static k1 then fluidised k1 then japmat... would it be better to aerate my jap mat as well as the k1???

Hi Andy

If you're using it for biological filtration - absolutely. Oxygenated water promotes better bacterial colonisation.

Cheers

I can understand him being upset with a company trying to interfere with publication or distribution of his book but jap matting cartridges and brushes aren't the be-all-and-end-all of filters. I'd also query that filter design in that it's not that easy to remove waste from the jap matting bay as the base isn't sloped and some dirt will get past the brushes. It'll work but then so will lots of ways and I don't think it's fundamentally different from many other filters. Personally I'd go with a vortex for initial settlement every time after seeing how much mine takes out totally passively.

Interesting idea about static K1 retaining some dirt though - that's something I've been wondering about with mine.

But since converting to k1 static and flidised last year I have never had such a clean pond, I havent had a UV for 6 months and cant wait for the HOT weather so I can put it to the test without the uv.

could put air in jap mat as an extra if I thought it would make that much difference though.
