New Pond Build In Between Big Pond Build Pump Advice Needed
Hello All
As you will have probably read in a previous post we are going to build a BIG pond .. Slowly but surely all the bits and bobs are coming together ...but in the meantime...
I have 14 koi that are growing at a rate of knots...so to give them some more room we are building a quick chuck up pond with railway sleeprs.
I have managed to get my hands on a cloverleaf CL2 which is meant to be able to cope with a 2500gallon koi pond.
Roughly working out the size i think it will just be under 1000 gallons and gravity fed from bottom drain.
What i would like to know is what size pump would i need ?
i have a couple of pumps knocking about ..an aquamax 15000l but i think that will be over kill or will it?
I also have a cheap and cheerful eagle aquatic 11000 ..but i am not sure if this could be dry mounted.
Anyway ..what do you think?
regards
Max

Hi Maxine,
1000 gallon pond, I would turn over once an hour, so a pump capable of 1000 gallons. Aqamax 15000 is a bit too large really, an Aquamax 5500 may do the business for you.
Cant comment on the other pump you mentioned, but if too large and all you have, then for the short time you have the pond, you could always throuttle back a ball valve installed on the outlet to the pump.

Hi Maxine,
Ive had two of the different CL fiters-i found that due to the up and over wier design it is very hard to get a fast fow rate through them-i woud check the website for the max fow rate of the fiter. The 15000 will be way to much-i tried to run a 10000 on the CL3 and ended up having to throttle it hafway back.
Gad to hear they are growing fast
Wont be ong til the main pond is done im sure!

Hello All
I thought a 5500 might do the jobbie...but had the spare pumps knocking about and thought they maybe of use ..but then they wouldnt be spares then LOL
OK ..i will keep my eyes peeled for a 5500...and give it a go.
The main pond build is still a way off yet .....i still have plenty of planning to do and more bits and bobs to find ..i dont want this to be a buy now pay later ..i certainly dont want to rush it.
With my mum being quite ill ..i have been spending a lot of my spare time visiting mum in Sheffield and my stupid shifts at work has ment slowing right down on the pond build ..so ..it will happen ..but when is the question ..no rush
The big koi are over filtered to the hilt ..so they should be fine even if they have to go through another winter..and of course the smaller sleeper pond should be fine too ..
thank you for the info
regards

Hello All
And so the digging begins ....
After much deep and meaningfull thought ..the plan has changed yet again ...
As the 10000 gal pond is on hold for the moment
(due to other half being made redundant)
We had planned on building another pond the same size as what we have already to give the babs some extra room ...
The extra cost to make it twice the size was'nt that much more ..so the in-between pond will now be 16ft by 8ft and we will see how far down we get ..hopefully 5ft deep.
Two bottom drains will be going in but these will be fitted to a liner ..(any advice would be most welcome)1 bottom drain to feed the nexus 300 and one to the ea stainless vortex's.
The original pond will have the easypod and the cl2 on it ..the babs will gain the original pond and the bruisers will have the big 16ft'er.
So we have a plan that makes a bit more sence now ..and all round all of them get more room
More updates soon
regards

I don't know how it is in the UK, but here in Holland most ponds are liner ponds. That said almost all the bottom drains have a flange with a cover ring to attach then to the liner. As the liners are 2 meter wide stokes that are vulcanized together, the most important thing is simple to make sure that one seams don't pass over the flange as it will leak due to the extra thickness of the seam. I would simply but down the pipework including the drains and cover it with clean sand. A layer of used synthetic carpet makes for extra protection against anything sharp in the sand.maxinegrundy wrote:...Two bottom drains will be going in but these will be fitted to a liner ..(any advice would be most welcome)1 bottom drain to feed the nexus 300 and

Hello B
Thank you for the tip much appreciated ..
I never gave it another thought about the join of the liner ..i am hopefully going to get a butyl liner this time ..
On the first pond we did ..the whole of the pond was lined with sand and the foil backed bubblewrap for insulation and then the geotextile material ..so i was pretty much going to do the same as it did help lots to keep the tempreture up over winter.
If this works out great i have plans to put a bottom drain in the original pond ..i have a spare liner that should fit the older pond.
I would love to get all this done by the end of august ..
Anyway i must go my parents are very kindly delivering to me a very nice kuchibeni sanke ...he should be arriving in the next 10 mins or so
so excited
