Re: POND BUILD ABOUT TO GET ON THE WAY AT LAST
it will be 12ft circle x 5ft deep looking at 4200 gal ? will be finished in 4 weeks, on question is insulation between to poly tank and facing wall what would be best to use ?
Re: POND BUILD ABOUT TO GET ON THE WAY AT LAST
Hi Shropshire koi
Are you including the capacity of your filters and pipework in the 4200 gallons?
According to my calculations, a 12ft circle, 5ft deep and filled to the brim will hold only just over 3500 gallons!
Still a nice sized pond (and bigger than mine!!) but it just shows how easy it is to misjudge our pond sizes and why it's so important to use a meter when you fill up so that you are certain of the volume of your pond for when you need to add any treatments!!
Back breaking work, but well worth it in the end!
Cheers

Re: POND BUILD ABOUT TO GET ON THE WAY AT LAST
i went on a site circle pond calculator typed in 12 ft diameter x 5ft deep and it came out with 4238 gal ? is this not correct , i will use a water meter anyway when i fill it up just to be sure !!

Re: POND BUILD ABOUT TO GET ON THE WAY AT LAST
Hi ShrropshireKoi
Try doing the sums. The formula to find the area of a circle is Pi (usually taken as 3.142) x the Radius (6 in this case) squared.
So the area of your pond = 3.142 x 6 x 6 = 113.112 sq ft.
The volume in cubic feet = the area x the depth = 113.112 x 5 = 565.56 cubic ft.
1 cubic ft = 6.25 gallons, therefore the volume in gallons = 565.56 x 6.25 = 3534.75 gallons maximum.
In reality, few people fill their ponds to the brim, so if you allow the surface of the pond to be 3" below the rim of the tank, the same calculation with a depth of 4'9" (4.75ft) will give a capacity of 3358 gallons plus your filters and pipework.
Sorry if that disappoints you, but if it really makes that much difference to plans, you're better off knowing now than later!
Cheers

Re: POND BUILD ABOUT TO GET ON THE WAY AT LAST
3534.75 gallons maximum ok thats fine not a problem bigger than what i had before and is as big as i can go in the area that i have !!

Re: POND BUILD ABOUT TO GET ON THE WAY AT LAST
Sorry mate, I forgot to mention before that the figures also depend on the sides of the tank being vertical
If they slope, i.e. the base has a smaller area than the top, the volume will be less.
Just calculate the area of the base (3.142 x radius of base squared), add it to the surface area and divide the total by 2.
Multiply that number by the depth and then 6.25 to get the volume in gallons.
If the diameter of the base is 1ft less than the top, the volume will be nearly 300 gallons less.
Still a nice size pond IMO - and over 400 gallons more than the total volume of my pond and filters!!
Cheers

Re: POND BUILD ABOUT TO GET ON THE WAY AT LAST
Just to clarify
3 534.75 Imperial gallons = 4 245.0595 US gallons
So you may both be right ... just different measures of a gallon

Thanks Chris.
The important issue here then is to make sure you now what "gallons" you're using when working out the dose for any treatments you may need to use!
