dave ...it enters towards the top \or over the top and is directed downwards at an angle if possible to create a vortex effect in the outer barrel , also stops it splashing all over the place and keeps it quieter, also puts less strain on the pump as it dosnt have to push against a wall of water in the barrel if you place the incoming low down , ....hope that helps a bit
