Egg Bound Fish - Can "Spawn" be Induced?

Post by Steve E. »

Hi All,

I have a large Ochiba that has apparently become egg bound. I have had other egg bound fish in the past eventually die. I would like to save this fish if possible. Is there a method to induce release of the eggs or can it be safely stripped under sedation?

Hi Duncan,

I will try and net it today. But not sure if my back will stand the stress. Still recovering from "throwing it out" last week. If I can do the job I will get a weight on it for you.

Steve,

I took three koi to a koi show this last weekend, and two spawned in the vat, so begs the question - have you tried to induce 'naturally'?

Big temp swings, change of water etc etc.

Mark

PS they are both back in the pond with a fag on lip attitiude...... not after affects.....

Hi Dunc,

I threw my back out Tuesday trying to net and weight the koi. Have been flat on the bed or floor since. Even with muscle relaxers it has been a bit rough. Today is the first day I have been able to sit upright. I will be going out to the pond later to check on things. Not sure when I will be able to try and net her again. If I do will move her to the qt/hospital tank with two others and see what happens. But don't believe it will help, I may have waited too long for things to resolve.

As I had feared, I had waited too long to intervene with treatment. I finally recovered enough from my back spasm to get out to the pond last night just after sun down as day time temps have been around 100 F with humidity in the 25% to 30% range. Found the fish floating. Not too happy with myself right now as I should have been smarter and acted faster. It is not like I do not know any better. The fish was close to 20 years old, but still I should have...well you all know the rest of the story.

Thanks to the suggestions by all.

Hi Steve

Sorry to hear your new's. A lesson learned but, I am sure other's will also say to of lost her so quickly the problem must of been more advanced than even you could of realised, and I would also guess that the impaction was so advanced that athe bacterial infection would already of taken hold. Not much of a help and I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong.

So once again sorry for your loss
