Post by taxikoi »

Hi.
Have just had a 4000 gallon pond built with nexus 200 filter gravity fed with spindrifter bottom drain, skimmer fed to hidroclean filter, have a pro clear uv55, new tube fitted.
problem is after only 3 days new pond as turned very green, all equipment working ok fish ok. pond is in full sun but is shadeded certain times of day because of pond being 34" above ground.
any ideas why water is so green.

Thanks for any help Taxikoi

Chances are that your new pond is trying to find balance.

Its not an uncommon problem with new pond builds .. until the pond cycles.

Hi,
Another thing worth checking would be the nitrate level in your water. You can have a nitrite value of 0 (hopefully!), but the nitrate can still be running very high. I have high nitrate readings and as there are no plants present in the water to use the excess nitrates the algae is able to use it to aid growth. :( A high nitrate level won't harm your fish though.
I combat the high levels with regular water changes of between 10% & 20% of total volume.

Pond crystal clear know, must have been new pond syndrome.
Thanks for replys.
Another question, am useing a hidroclean as a mechanical filter off my skimmer line, could i use k1 in hidroclean filter if so what would you put it in,and would this add extra biological filteration.
Thanks Taxikoi.
