Hi Lee

Having just built something similar (see "Jon's growing on pond" thread further down the page) it all looks rather familiar! What did you do for the base? I agonised for ages before laying a 9" concrete base over an existing 12" concrete floor. I presume you are going to heat as it is a QT. Have you thought how you are going to insulate the bakki shower? I'm currently exercising whats left of my brain with the best way to provide a good level of heat retention whilst still allowing gassing off.

Looks like it's going well.

Regards

Jon W

hi jon

regarding the floor i have lots of blocks left so i am going to lay them flat on the floor using mortar and then leveling compound which i can get from work  and then kingspan up to the level of the bottom drain did think about cutting the drain into the floor but to muck work, also going to kingspan the walls like when i did the pond.

yes it will be heated and i will make a polycarbonate cover for the pond which will be on hinges and on a pully system so i can lift the cover if i go with a bakki shower would make a frame and cover with polycarbonate but leave a 1" gap at the top to gas off.

hope to get finnished before the end of march ready for the tosai coming in from japan.

Hi Lee

I was thinking along similar lines for the bakki shower, athough because it will be almost flush against an outside wall I was going to use Kingspan to line the wall prior to creating the box. The one thing I wasn't sure about was how to allow for gassing off. 1" at the top should do it?
I'll be insterested to see your pond cover. I wanted to do the same but because the roof beams are so high and not configured in a way that would easily allow a pulley system, I've got a bit stuck on that one.

Cheers

Jon

Hi Guys,

Lots of people use polycarb round there showers i think Bob does the same on his outside pond.

Yes I used to use Poly carb on the old shower, now I use nothing! This was on an outside pond, in my GOP I dont cover it at all.

Would post some pictures, but KoiPix isnt working currently.

Hi Lee

I like the wooden facing you've put on the outside of the tank. What is it? Marine ply, and if so have you treated it with anything?

Cheers

Jon

hi jon

yes it is marine ply i just used matt varnish 5/6 coats.

i have changed my mind on the pond cover which i was going to lift up on a pulley system i have now decide that i am, going to kingspan the roof over the tank and use some upvc cladding over the kingspan and also kinspan the back wall above the pond and clad that as well and above the blocked walls i am going to make a frame and cover on both sides with polycarb so it looks like a japanesse fish house going to make some slidding doors above the pond window this should retain the heat so saving a few bob on heating.

Hi Lee

Will the frame for the cover sit on top of the pond walls or will it be outside and thus create a room within a room? I've thought about doing something along those lines not just for insulation but to cut down on condensation throughout the rest of the building. How high above the pond would you have the cover above the pond?

Cheers

Jon

hi jon

the frame will sit on top of the pond walls the roof is only 3 feet 6" above the pond walls should work out very well still leave me enough room to get the car in.
