Winter questions.

Post by Russ Little Pond »

My pond is sunken only 3ft deep and my return comes over the top of the pond down and sits just of the bottom, I also have a big air disc in the middle on the bottom.
Should I lift the return so it`s only a foot into the pond and take out the air disc over winter ??

Thanks russ.

This is one of those questions that everyone argues about and in the end, it comes down to personal preference.

My answer would be that the pond is too shallow and probably too small to get a temperature gradient between surface and bottom, so I'd argue that slightly colder but better oxygenated and filtered water is better for the fish and means they have to expend less energy existing at the bottom of a cold pond than if the air was off and the filtered water was returning higher up.

Where is the intake for the filter? Because if it is pulling from the bottom and returning to the bottom you could argue that as long as the filter is well insulated, you are not cooling the water at the bottom at all....

Thanks for the reply,

Water is fed 4 inches from below surface.
Ive just boxed my filter in, just needs a lid and insulating all round.
I will be ordering insulation monday and ordering plastic to cover pond and filters.
