Simply Koi and More Koi

Anyone increasing the amount of insulation on their QTs this year?

Our growing on and QT are in an insulated shed, GO is at 24, air temp in the shed Friday at 7am was 20, put on the Polycarb cover Saturday, air temp this morning in the shed was down to 16!!

I need to sort the insulation on the outside of the QT. Is Kingspan the best way to go for this?

When i built my QT i put Kingspan on the inside of all the walls like a sandwich between the marine ply

I was talking about insulation to Sushi this weekend and he made a very good point (not too unusual!!!! ). I have a QT already (a frame pool with liner) and as it's already structurally sound then he suggested that 50mm polystyrene sheets would be cheaper, lighter and excellent insulation. You could glue it to the outside of an existing QT pretty easily. 50mm insulates most tropicals during shipping - but I'm still thinking of using two layers!!!

You are on the same lines as me, the more insulation that goes on the less grief I will get from the other half when it gets cold!!

Must look at the thermal qualities of Kingspan against 50mm or more probably 100mm polystyrene, think KS board is about double the cost of 50mm polystyrene.

My tank is outside, not enclosed in a shed---even though it should be. I use polystyrene and am thinking of going up to 100+ mm.(although I am happy with 50mm---like beer--you can never have enough
The only problem I have /still get with poly is if you are not careful when doing maintainance etc it tends to break off into little balls and the fish think its food--so I keep a little net handy to skim it out when It drops in, if you have some sort of skimmer fitted I doubt it would be a problem at all.

For uneven surfaces or to wrap something up such as Vortex's, try this stuff.

It's called thermawrap and is bubblewrap coated with a silver surface on both sides. I read somewhere that it's as good as 4" of normal inulation, but I can find the link which showed the insulation properties compared to each other.

Looks like you have a bulk buy there, was that off of ebay?

I've seen some which has the aluminum on both sides and some which has it on one side, I guess they have differeing insulation values.
