One I did Yesterday window.

I have been asked by a few people how I constructed my window in such a simple way without a frame, below I have tried to illustrate in a simple manner and I hope this helps.
The pond is 8’ x 8’ x 8’, this was constructed by 8 x 18mm sheets laid lengthways/upright into the excavation and re-enforced the top 4’ by 4 x 18mm sheets running across the vertical sheets. These were tapered on the bottom edge so as not damage the liner. The boards were supported by 3meter 3”x 3” upright posts driven vertically at the back of the boards. The pond rises 30” above the front ground level.

The window is constructed of a piece of 5’ x 3’ x 12mm laminated glass fitted on the inside of the pond and supported by strips of 12mm ply fixed to the pond side, these were also tapered. I cut a hole through both pieces of 18mm ply 2’ x 4’ and fitted the glass after covering the sides liberally with soft putty. When the liner was fitted I placed cold butyl adhesive tape around the glass to seal the unit.

All the walls of the pond were back filled with sand which I saturated as I was backfilling, this gave the walls of the pond a solidity similar to concrete.

Sorry about the drawings but I am not very good with graphics.

Phil

PS just tried to past the graphis but can't manage it, told you I was rubbish. I will take a photo of the page at home and paste it latter. Meantime the script may explain something.

Phil - Well done mate with design and posting. I had the same problem with pasting a week or two ago. Do what you can do even with a picture still like to see it.

I still am having problems with my diagram.

Still what I wanted to say was that make sure that the wall with the window in has suficient supports to stop the wall bellying out or this will crack the glass.

I am about to fit 2 x 4' lintels sunk in as uprights at each side of the window just to make sure that the window is supported at each end and with extra cross bracing at the top and bottom of the window with 3" x 3". I should have done the lintel trick at the begining instead of doing a retro fit.

Hey Ho! who needs an easy life anyway?
