Which pond pump

Hi All, I have been having help on allotments4All website and was directed here.

Have had a pond for about 20 years! Been running something like a stuart type pump that should be doing 2000GPH at 450 watts but just checked and it seems to be chucking out about 740GPH

Guessing it is tired and needs replacing, I have googled myself to bits in the search of a new pump that is cheaper to run.

Any ideas? something about 9000LPH or 2000GPH going into a cloverleaf filter of the model I cannot remember!

I guess we pump up about 1.5m

The pond has bottom drain that gravity feeds into settlement chamber where the pump is. This pumps up to the cloverleaf filter which gravity feeds back into pond. The UV is between pump and filter.

And also, should we turn over the water at 1 pond volume an hour or every 2 hours? Is there a "right" ammount?

Andy H (1st post)!!!

Hi Andy,

Oase Aquamax 16,000 Eco. No contest. At 1.5 metres you'd get around 2,000 gph through 1 1/2 inch pipe (11880 lph actually claimed).170 ish watts, less in the winter if you use the seasonal control (temperature controlled speed limiting).

I like to turn the pond over 1x per hour in the summer and drop it to 1/2 per hour in the winter. But there's no right answer to your question.A filter will have a maximum flow so it depends on how much filtration you've got.A Bakki Shower would be happy at 3x per hour.

Thanks for that, That bakkishower looks imoressive. What is the far INFRARED bit about???

It there something special in the system?

Would a massive tank of media with water in water out have the same effect?

What indeed. I try not to think about it.Wouldn't mind one though just on gathered anecdotal evidence.

Erm,yes.Momotaro's grand champions.

They developed the Bakki House media specifically for their systems and I believe it is used both submerged and showered in the 1500 ton pond (70 fish in 330,000 imperial gallons.Nice). I've only heard good things about Bakki Showers and sniffy things about the science.Makes a great story after a few beers though.

Yeah couldn`t afford it anyway. May just try to add more flowcore in a shower or tank system to existing cloverleaf2. then slowly change to a better media as time goes on.

We now have clear water again but cleaning the sponges evey 2 or 3 days.

wonder if there is anyone close by that could take a look at our set up!

It will never be a top koi pond but if we can keep the koi healthy and the water clear and low on the parameters then I will be happy. as there is physically not much room to improve. Wish we had sunk the CL2 in the ground though.
