Simply Koi and More Koi

Was looking around for an alternative to Kaldness K1 media and came across this:-

Is there anyone using this that could provide comparisons?

Not using it but it sounds fine.

HSA (High Surface Area) filter media. Manufactured from black Polypropylene. Surface area of approximately 963m2/m3. The media has a density very close to that of water which makes it suitable for fluidised and free floating filters. Proven in waste water and fish farming - now available for the pond market.

About half the price of K1/Bioflow too.

yeah, the only problem is minimum order of £90.00 which means I'll have to order 200kg .

Seems like a poor copy of somebody elses idea.

I think that you have to be careful of these copies.

I've read about other people buying similar stuff but it collapses or disintegrates because it is not as robust ( no internal structure and that also means less surface area for bacteria to grow on)

I wouldn't risk it go for thre proper stuff it lasta a lifetime

Why is it a poor copy? From the photo it looks acceptable and from the tech. info. its specifications are similar. Please share your thoughts.

I think that it is the same media that cuttlebrooks use

It has no internal structure, so when it is agitated and bounced about it will squash out of shape.

Plus if there is no internal structure there is less surface area for bactreria to grow on (equivalent amount of K1 will grow more bacteria therefore more efficient)

Actually it has a larger surface area than K1.

Kaldnes has a high specific surface area per volume of 800 m2 / m3

HSA Surface area of approximately 963m2/m3

I really can't see it collapsing just because it's being agitated with air.Wouldn't mind getting some in my hand for a squeeze test though.

From the specs I could find it seems this has a larger surface area than the K1 and whilst I accept that though use the shape may change due to no internal structure this would not increase / decrease that surface area, would it? So shouldn't be a problem.

I use it and it's fine... it wont collapse, it's quite rigid... some pics attached

I wouldn't mind a small bag to mix in with my K1 give it a bit of colour and to see the effects better of it all moving about.

Hi Nic,

I have 200 litre of the stuff. But I only use it as a static media to trap dirt. I have never used it as a fluidised media, I prefer K1 for that. As Angie points out there is no internal structure to the media so it is supposed to be more prone to damage (gets squashed!!). I must admit I have not seen any evidence of damage after 18 months of use as a static media which only get fluidised a couple times a week for cleaning.

By the way where about in the country are you? If you are anywhere near North/East London or going up to the National I think I have a bag (about 100ltr) of it lying around somewhere in my garden that you can have. It is a tip in my garden at the moment so I can't promise anything!! I also have 200ltr of "used" K1 sitting around somewhere in that tip, but will need to be persuaded to get rid of as that costs a lot more that the black stuff.
