Interesting!

I don't think the skin quality can be as different as it looks on the photos, so I'm giving number 1 the benefit of the doubt there - probably equal to number 2 if you see them in the flesh.

Body shape looks good on both as well.

For me, #2 has too much Hi around the gill plates and the front Sumi marking looks much heavier than the rest on the same koi. Both the head and overall Hi pattern looks more interesting to me, and the sashi and kiwa look good on both - maybe a slight blurr on #1 where the Hi plates are close together, but might go as the koi grows. The sumi pattern is more evenly sized and spaced on #1 - but it doesn't look finished yet.

I also like the sumi in the pec of #1 and the fact that the Hi stops before the tail fin (ojime?)

Overall, I think I'd go for number 1 - but I wouldn't mind either!

Cheers

Hi Del

Similar thoughts to Bob --- that koi 1 has had a bad draw on the photo quality, and koi 2 had her photogenic best looks on for her photo.

Just for clarity, neither of these koi's were Shintaro No 1 nisai? That honour, as I understand it, fell to the koi below.

Shintaro sanke certainly are an acquired taste. The beni is so hard and often occupies a high % of the body, the sumi is often "up early".

OK Which one? Well based on the photos I'd say they are fairly evenly matched. Both are good koi, no doubt. Both appear to have demerits too judging purely from the photos (and these photos lie! I know).

I actually think it should be No 1 but can't believe it is because of (a) the small sumi marks on the head and (b) in the blown up photo you can see the hi breaking up or have a grey shene on (i) just above the left pec (ii) between the first two major sumi spots on the right hand side of the koi towards her lateral line. Is this just in the picture, Del?

So it forces me to go with No 2 despite having reservations about that choice. If it's just the picture on the hi issue above then it's No 1 for me.

Thanks, Del. My sanke is more an experiment than yours - given Isa isn't renowned for his sanke. But yes, am hopeful of something there. She has settled in well.

Yep, so Shintaro's no 1 available koi. Sounds good to me :D

I'm still struggling with this one - great little puzzle. So were those hi marks I pointed our just the photo or do they exist??? [looking for clues you can see!]

Not the best on these things delboy but for me, if I had to choose one, I would go for No 1, Both have good body shape and great shiro so it comes down to pattern and I really dont like the very solid heavy patch of sumi on the shoulder of Koi 2, no1 looks as if it will balance more and the pattern takes you on an interesting journey from front to back.

For me No2 is ready now, No 1 has got more to come, and thats what makes it difficult! I voted for 2 because a) it floats my boat b) No1 has a fair bit more to go c) I'm an impatient bugger and no2 is a corker.

I think you've got the best of both worlds tho, A cracking fish now, and a potentially even better fish to come!
