spongy belly
Hi everyone
I have a fish that has sat on the bottom now for 3 weeks could be more. It sometimes does a few laps of the pond and takes a few pellets when it feels like it, but most the time its on the bottom.
At first there wasn't a mark on it, but as time has gone by she developed an infection on its belly from sitting on the bottom for so long, this got quite bad within a week, removed about 10 scales gave it a good clean, treated and returned. 4 days later it got a little worse removed 10 more scales, another good clean, treated and returned.
Vet gave me a bottle of Baytril, he hasn't seen the fish, he advised 5ml injection every other day. Gave her a jab that same day of the 2nd treatment.
Went to work for 3 days and just netted her this morning for her 2nd jab and treatment. The belly certainly doesn't look as bad as it did on Sunday, so an improvement after one injection. Fingers crossed it continues.
A couple of questions if I may.
Does 5ml every other day seem excessive for a 15lb fish 70cm?
I am not sure what the underlying problem is, definitely female, seems to still be carrying a small amount of eggs, and the belly feels spongy or fluidy to touch. Doesn't look bloated though, I have a few other females that are larger. Should a healthy female belly feel like this?
Pond is still at 20 degrees to help healing, gills look good, no parasites, other fish are still feeding like crazy.
Any thoughts would be great.
Thanks
Dave

Re: spongy belly
Hi mate
Had her out this morning for another injection, I noticed there was an orangy discharge from her vent, I gave her belly a slight squeeze and some more came out. Do you think it's worth to continue?
The infection on her belly is also worse too, feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.

Re: spongy belly
Yes you can carry on as you are there's no harm in doing that
See if you can get a picture of the discharge for me to better advise

Ok thanks will do.
I'll do the next jab on Tuesday afternoon, so I'll take some photos then.
Thanks for your help.

Re: spongy belly
Well I did the jab the other day and typically the only thing coming out of her vent was poo.
I'll add some photos shortly.
There has been no improvement to speak of, the infection on her belly is slowly getting worse, removed 2 more scales on Tuesday. I'll net her tomorrow and see how it's looking.
I was watching her quite a bit yesterday, when she's off the bottom her swimming is erratic, sometimes bumping into the wall, swimming fast while gulping a few times, then she sinks like a lead to the bottom. It seems she has to swim fast to stop herself from sinking if that makes sense.
