Here's question that you might be able to shed some light on. When a fish is out of water is it true that the brain chemistry changes so that it can survive for longer without oxygen?

I would say yes on my experience Syd as I had 1 of my koi done a jumper on going to my pond I see 1 of the on my patio dry as a bone with blood everywhere that came from out of its gills with no movement from its gills and mouth you would have said dead as a dodo, on picking it up I decided to put the fish over the pond return with the mouth over the outlet so to flush the blood out of its gills then over an air stone slowly going backwards and forwards to the air and returns it took me about 1.5 hours to bring it back that was least year the fish is still swimming around my pond now


The strange thing about it while I had it in my net the other koi was nudging him while he was in the net had I have not seen myself I would had said load of old poppycock

The brain upon being deprived of oxygen the brain of a carp produces ethanol which protects the brain, crucian carp have been known to live up to 24 hours with out water, so unlike humans who would be brain dead in a matter if minutes the carps brain survives for quite a few hours. also the heart beats for many many hours too, i have demonstrated this in my wet labs, where i have held a a beating heart in my hands.

all of this means after several hours the brain is protected the heart is still beating all you need do is add oxygenated water to start things up again

i'll see if i can find my references to this , but be warned im working long days at the moment so it may take a while to get around to it

I have been lucky enough to see this on a wet lab with Duncan and actually hold the heart and still feel it bettiing....its a strange feeling !!
