Simply Koi and More Koi

8 year old,16" gold Ogon has developed a large rasperry coloured growth on the tail fin.

Previously treated iaw Duncan`s book for fin rot & recovered normally.

The growth became evident last month when lifted for a salt bath.

All my fish have had carp pox during their formative years & it is not that.

It is very similar to the koiphen image here:-

I am unsure how to treat this Duncan ?

Yes, understood Duncan. I will do that in a couple of days, when camera is available.

The picture shown virtually replicates the growth but obviously mine is smaller.

I assumed tumours only occurred on fish body ?

yes that why we need a photo it may be dermocystidium which can present like tumour but on the fin

Hope you don't mind but I've edited your post to include the picture in order to make the thread easier to follow. There are two ways to include pictures instead of a link in a post:

Upload direct from a picture on your computer
Put the cursor where you want the picture, (a couple of lines below the text)
Click "Upload Attachment" tab
Browse your computer until you find the picture (then double click or open it)
Click "Add The File"
Click "Place Inline"

You can then add some text to explain the picture if you wish

For more pictures, reposition the cursor and repeat

As usual, click "Preview" to see what your post (including the picture) will look like and then "Submit" when you're happy



Including picture from the Internet (but make sure you either own the picture or have appropriate permission)
There are different ways to do this but this is one way that works
Right click the picture from the on-line source and pick "Properties"
In the "Properties" box that appears, put the cursor in the address
On your keyboard, press ctrl+A then ctrl+insert - that will copy the url (the Internet address) even if it's long and complicated
Press "OK" to get rid of the box

Now write your post and put the cursor where you want the picture, (a couple of lines below the text)
Click the img button from the row above and this will appear with the cursor flashing in the centre [lmg][/img]
Press shift+insert
The image tags will now have the url in between them like this
[lmg]http://www....complicated stuff.....[/img]
(Sometimes the urls are quite long and may take up a couple of lines but don't try to fiddle with it to try to make it look better)

You can then add some text to explain the picture if you wish

For more pictures, reposition the cursor and repeat

As usual, click "Preview" to see what your post (including the picture) will look like then "Submit" when you're happy

Hi There

there is definetly some carp pox going on there but the bulky bit on the tip ( hi lited in black) is tumour from what i can make out by the photo
what you do about it depends on your level of expertise cutting the outlined area out and putting topical on the other area's, one things for sure this needs cutting out

That is at my experience threshold
If it was the same size as the one in your book, I would not hesitate.

I will give it some thought.

Long overdue reply.
I left it for some time & eventually had a go. Followed Duncan`s advice & removed it fairly cleanly.
Fish has completely recovered & is growing steadily.
Needless to say it has given me the confidence to conduct any future surgery !

Thanks Glenn, the fish has now fully recovered with carp pox gone & tail fin regrown back to normal.

This was one of my earliest fish, purchased from Koi Polloi @ 2" long & despite imperfect husbandry in its early years is still growing.
