whats the overall symptoms of the fish other than this
like i have taught you discount what it isn't and whats left is what it must be however unlikely
so its not a parasite its unlikly to be bacterial but it could be i suppose im gonna assume its not water related or more fish would show it and you water im betting is spot on
so im left with a vitamin problem or viral
whats the frame of the fish like? is it bloated? how fast did this appear and are any other similar ?

Duncan,
The koi behaves perfectly normal - feeding well.
Not bloated or out of shape
it is male and is 8 years old
Water is better than it has ever been IMO. (PH - 7/7.1, TDS 110-120, KH 2, GH 2, Amm - 0, Nitrite - 0)
In terms of other koi there is one other with hints of it. But they are again very symmetrical in placement - this koi is female though. There are 15 koi in the pond in total.
It was there a little bit (much less) last year but disappeared over winter but has returned this year but worse (no other koi affected last year) - I did wonder if it was related to the koi being male (infected tubucules?)
The other thing is if you disturb them they bleed.

sorry mate forgot all about this i have spoken about this with people in the know and they have drawn a blank
as lee said its for all the world like the puncture marks where a parasite has been feeding but you would have seen this argulus would be my guess if there was one
so im going with some kind of virus of which there are many many fors the cuase localised heamoraging
in any event you may have to send samples of to a lab to get this one identified i dont think its the kind of things that a pond side diagnosis is possible
my advice is talk to Paula she has the facility to deal with this

OK,
An update...... Paula felt could be a number of things and left me with two options.
i). Try an experiment of injecting the koi with a course of baytril (10%) at 0.1ml per KG with 3 clear days between the injections.
ii). Take the koi to her and she would take blood samples etc and try to be more accurate.
She felt at this stage it could be either Viral or bacterial but was more concerned about the hemoraging in the fins rather than the head. I opted to do the first option as it was something i could do myself immediately with no hassle and with nothing to lose (as such).
Note:- In between the forst set of pictures and this next set i scraped and topically treated the head area of the koi only with mercurachrome to see if it had any effect. In short - Nope!
However today upon netting to carry out the first injection i noticed that the hemoraging in the fins had practically gone.

Gazza,
Yes i did - having taken the trouble to seek out opinion i decided best to follow it through. Fingers crossed it will tidy it up 100% will keep the thread updated and Paula has asked to be kept in the loop.
