Simply Koi and More Koi

i know its not fish but its kinda related

i have a sussex chicken with a gammy foot it took to being a bit lame then sitting in the dirt all the while

when i examined the foot it was favouring either side og the middle toe had turned a very nice malachite greeen colour with some black right deep inbetween the toes so it was obviously infected

so i though baytril was developed for chickens and i have plenty so she had a shot i based the does on the same as baytril use for koi and draw enough for three injections based on a weight of 1.5kg body weight

the first jab was last night depsire me feeeling really ill and tonight i went out to collect the eggs and give here the second shot and she is up and about and not favouring the foot so much so she had the second jab, tomorrow she will get the last

Apols for the non related query, but a Baytril related query.

I know that legally not allowed, the storage of antibiotics, but out of interest, the 'urban myth?' relating to the koi hobby and keeping a stock of baytril -

If immediately (within days of breaking seal) frozen in syringes in the domestic freezer - can this beat the efficacy issue?

Or is this a waste of cash?

I'd be interested In Duncan's response on this too as this is exactly what i do. Seems to work for me - still got multiple syringes that i froze down a couple of years ago and on the odd occasion (poorly chagoi) that i needed to use they were fine. It is all about looking at the colour when you defrost - if it is straw coloured = no good.

There is no need to freeze down baytril, or for that matter gentamycin , amakacin , nuflor, they will last for years... the only ones that usually have a very short shelf life and require freezing to preserve are the one we make up ourselves that come in a kit form with a white powder and a ampual of saline or water namely azactam or fortum

fortum and Azactam usually only make up small amounts so there is not a huge amount to freeze if need be

for your info i am running with a bottle of 10% baytril which is half used now and is at least 3 years old since opening
i have just bought a new bottle of kanamycin and gentamycin but the old is showing no signs of age ( i.e going staw coloured )

what i will say is do not use a used needle for reloading

below the chickens foot all nice and the right colour after useing baytril, yup three year old
