Simply Koi and More Koi

I have made an air pump powered protein skimmer and tested it in a water butt and it worked really well. But when i put it in the pond yesterday it didnt seem to be removing anything. Is this because there is no DOCs in the water?

Also does it matter how deep the protein skimmer sits? Is the protein etc suspended in the water or does it float on the water?
