John,

I 'think' my pond water looks cleaner, but it could just be me wishing it was. It was always clean anyway, but no seems to sparkle. Perhaps it's the Winter snow sparkling through the poly carb roof - LOL

I'll have a decent look tomoorow in proper daylight, when testing the throughput.

I am test running some new food Duncan has produced, the waste is quite minimal even at the large amounts I'm using, so things are looking up on the food front.

I also have some pro-biotics in powder form, which I must try soon, just to see if it reduces the waste any further. Just not enough time to test everything for long enough to really prove a case!

Hi Bob
I am sure it’s a lot cleaner if that’s possible not just wishful thinking.
Have you done the torch test at night?

You seem to be doing a lot of tests at the same time don’t you think one might influence another.
I should talk I am exactly the same lol, you go for it bob.
Or are you looking at this as long term, towards growth

I had to look pro biotic up I am afraid.
They seem to do exactly the same thing as daphnia?

I am looking forward to the results from tomorrow but may not see them till Sunday/Monday the wife will kill me if I go near the pc.
So take this time to wish you and yours
A happy new year
See you in 2006
John

John,

I've tested the output now and it's running at 462 gallons/hour turnover. This is with the delivery valves throttled back, if I open it further, then itwill suck in air after a short while.

Pond does look very clear though, nice to see the Koi properly again.

Compares to what I get. I have a bit more lee-way but my q-tank filter is slightly larger.
How big is the feed to the fiter from the q-tank Bob?
I have a 75mm feed (3"?) and it seems to handle the 500 gallons an hour I run with little trouble.

Mine is 2" Scott and 'only' just copes with this throughput. Perhaps if it hade been 3" it may be able to handle a greater throughput.

That seems about right Bob. That extra inch more than doubles the flow rate! :D

Hi bob/Scott
Your mini has proved itself bob in a very short time at good flow rates too very impressive.
I take it you have weed with having a transparent roof it will be interesting if you experience the same as Scott regarding the weed.

Since your comparing sizes lol
Do you think/know if the size of prefilter such as this is important in comparison to stocking rates?
Eg. If the easy was large with low stocking levels, would most of the bacterial conversion happen in the easy, and the constant cleaning create spikes?
Or would the rest of the filtration iron this out.

I don't think it matters much in the way of fines capture.

Yes i would agree with Scott as i just think of this as a mechanical filtration just for catching fines...which it does and does very very well :D

I think you misunderstand Scott.
Say that bobs mini had 50 liters of static k1,
And the quarantine tank only had 10â€Â

Gazza where did you come from. You really need to give me more time to type a reply.lol
Is this a definite no then?

Boo lol Hi John

Yes thanks just a few days away and a good time was had by all,all be it with not much sleep :( :(

I don't think it will make any difference to be honest and if you did get a small amount at least it would add to the bio.

I have about 35-40lts of static K1 in my vortex and think it works great :D

John,

There's only a small amount of K1 in there, perhaps 10-15 litres. I have that plastic box 3-tier shower after it, which is very impressive with whatever I throw at it.

The 450 gallon pond has21 Koi in there. Most are between 4-8", but 3 of them are over 12 inches, the biggest went in at 36cm (14"). I feed a big handful of Duncan's best pellets morning and night and at weekends a 3rd handful.

Very little waste due to the great food and what fines get through, the K1 stops.

Sometime soon I'll have to measure some of the Koi, because they are growing like mad, especially the 36cm Kohaku (Maruyama). 100% female now, getting some decent body on it and with the fast turnover no fat at all.

Yeah we'll both have to have a measure up, see how they are getting on eh!

Havent measured TDS yet - oops!
