Hi Mio have I missed a thread somewhere, has Duncan already done another thread somewhere else?

Please Keep us posted of your future developments.
After two weeks changing 5% pond volume per day, 50% RO 50% purified. I have reduced the G.H. of pond water from 70 to 50ppm. and TDS to 75ppm. I have had to add small amounts of bicarb to maintain a k>h of 30ppm. This morning the p.H as got down to 7.0. The p.H is fluctuating a little more than I would like 0.4. on suuny days But koi do not seem to mind. I realize this is probably due to photosythisis of blanketweed/algea, but as this is hardly detectable ( First time ever I have not had to treat for blanketweed in april) I am hoping that once I get my G.H below the k>H without increasing the TDS too much that the p.H will stablize. ( still not sure why this is so ???) I am just about to fit a metals removal cartridge to my exsisting 2 pod purifiier, after getting a recent water quality report in the the hope of improving the water supply even more. I understand that this too may have an effect of lowering the p.H( don't know why, perhaps some metals actually increase p.H.???) but will be monitoring things closely
Best Regards Dave
Hi Dave my tds seems to be hovering at about 90~ppm at the moment. Found my UV had stopped working a couple of weeks back and now my water is like pea soup because of an algea bloom so I`m keeping an eye on my pH at the mo although the koi seem quite happy with it but I should hopefully have it back to normal in a week or two. I think once I get a constant trickle of water going through and an overflow setup I will be able to bring my TDS lower however I am going to try and hang on until I fit the heating system as I need to redo some of the pipework from the filter so instead of shutting down the filtration system twice I`ll shut it down once and do it all together.
Your RO system seems to be working well, I`ll be starting to check my GH and KH over the next few weeks, starting from tonight, to get an idea of what levels are there and I shall take it from there. I guess we will see what the GH is and alter the water changes to suit if needed. :-D

So I have just taken a 50ml sample of pond water to test for the General Hardness using the Kusuri test kit that I have got. Added the first tablet which turned the water to a plum red then added another which turned it to a blue colour, so it only took two tablets altogether.

Now for the calcuation:
2 x 40 = 80 - 20 = 60mg/l CaCO3

Converted to dH:

60 / 17.9 = 3.35 dH

You need to test KH too :D along with the GH/KH/TDS of the Supply also for Comparison :!:

I shall go and buy kH test kit at some point this week then I can get down to business :?

Just been reading some of the previous posts about tds, gh and kh etc and my head is scrambled
I think my next Open Uni course will be a chemistry one

Thanks Mio.
