Simply Koi and More Koi

Hiya Gazza,

Looks great. I'd love a shower but am put off by the noise it might make as I have an alleyway running down the side of my garden and don't want to advertise the fact that I have koi. Does yours make much noise>

It wont do when it enclosed

Today was spent messing around with pollycarb to enclose the shower to help with keeping it insulated and keeping some of the noise down

Although the wife wanting to leave it as it was she was unwilling to pay the gas bill if it increased which i am sure it will so i set about enclosing the shower the best i could.I decided in bronze 25mm pollycarb to match the colour of the pergola and the 25mm because it has a great insulation rating and is also strong and robust.

The sides where made up and put into position so i could then get some measurements for the top:

The top was the measured and cut and end caps and angle was used so it would fit and hold in position:

Once the sides and top was all fixed it was time to mesure the front,this was hooked onto the shower so it can be easily removable if needed.The complete unit can be removed with just a few screws so can be stripped down within minutes

All done and finished off and so far i am very pleased with the shower and although a bit early to see but the fish do seem to be a lot more active the last couple of days and i have not increased the temperature of anything else so who knows They do seem to be defiantly looking for food and i have been feeding them a little about every hour and its gone in a flash

Hi Gazza

Nice one - looks really good. What components did you use to fit the polycarb panels together? I've been trying for ages to work out what to use to do the same job on my shower, pond cover and a 4 metre window. I can't find anything locally and have put off ordering on the internet because I'm not exactly sure what to buy.

I used the fixing from the suppler C & A Plastics and the main ones just screwed straight into the wood

Yes its all gone well and the next project is to grow some fish on

Still i am wondering what i could rig up in the space where the old TT was maybe something for the QT tank

I've looked at the C & A site loads of times and got confused (not hard I know). Did you use F profile and end cap strips or glazing bars. If the former, did you screw the panels together with self tapping screws to each other or is everything held together with a wooden frame?

Bob, Whats next is the saving of the extra ££££ to put towards his gas bill,
As you know when i had my shower it was incased in a near air tight insulated box, and i once did a test to see what sort of heat loss i was getting.

In the 1st 24 hrs with the shower on and running 3000 gph the boiler was on for 1.3 hours , in the next 24 hrs without the shower on the boiler was on for 0.4 hours. This was done in september with a pond temp of 24

Mind you i do like the look of showers but i think they loose to much heat, even when i used it on my GOP.

Keep us posted gazza if you notice a difference.

I'm sure the fish looked happier before you put the shower on...........

Yes for sure the shower will loose the heat but i hope the extra benefit will out way the heat loss

No mate sold my shower as i found it to be the cause of my clarity issue;s (you know how gin i like it)
Has it made a difference to the pond/koi . Not sure yet as it was taken offline at xmas time so pond not running full bore.
Hoping that the Aquadyne will cope on its own sure it will.

How on earth was it causing clarity issues my pond has been clearer than ever scince i added mine

The only thing i can think is that it was the media shedding continuosly
Mind you, the shower didnt have bhm, not sure if that would of been any different.

Seen a few ponds now with showers and IMOA none have good clarity

What media was you using

To be honest i am not that worried about clarity (although don't get me wrong i do want to see the fish) it was the quality of the water i like.I want good water and not just clear water so my fish can reach there full potential,not size but skin the lot

Looking good, Gazza. Your koi will appeciate you more for it

As for clarity... I do see Dan's point. However, I have seen several ponds which are primarily shower based that have very good clarity so it can be done. But they wouldn't meet Dan's gin requirements, though.

As for mine (heavily shower dependent pond), well, when your blanketweed is shedding itself every couple of weeks then clarity really can't be expected! Hopefully, it will stabalise as the pond matures again after its rebuild. I did almost see the bottom last week
