OK I have an idea. Let me first say the screen should be CURVED not flat. If you have flattened it you may well have ruined it. I hope not.

The main point I wish to make is perhaps the screen is in UPSIDEDOWN! If you look at it edge on, you should see the screen is angled in one direction. These teeth should be into the flow

Water flow over the top of the screen >>>> tooth direction \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\.

Hi Guys,

Ok still not working right-just checked it after another 24hrs,overflow pipe is wet and masses of waste bypassing screen again

Bob-unfortunately the roof is to low for me to be able to use the lid-will try covering though as im sure the bio film would benefit from light!

Scott-The screen is curved-i havent touched the screen at all, what i meant was that the shelf it sits on its level and so ive levelled it out so the unit is now level.

Ive now moved the sieve off the shelf and have it running on the side of the pond so i can actualy seee inside at whats actually going on! Will tyest it over the next few days and see what happens!

I wonder if the spray bar is causing a restriction perhaps? Ive also fitted a seal round the screen to stop the waste bypassing round the screen! Will keep you informed on what i find!

Cheers Andy :D :D :D

Andy,

From the pictures you have posted, it looks to be working OK. The water is going through the screen and the waste is being pushed down the slope nicely.

Obviously though from what you are saying, the screen is blocking and some water going the bypass.

Hi Guys,

Ok have solved the mystery! Unfortunately when i got up this morning and checked the sieve it was overflowing and bypassing the screen (about 12 hours) The screen had collected masses of waste by had clogged in the process! Obviously this was the problem but the waste was being washed passed the screen before and so it seemed it wasnt collecting that much waste. The seal i fitted has stopped the waste going around the screen but it seems there is to much waste for it to handle :( :( :(

I gave the screen a clean this morning and popped it back, 8 hours later and this is what i found :( :( :(

Will keep checking it this evening to try and work out how quickly it blocks-unfortunately cleaning it this frequently is out of the question so i guess its back to the drawing board!

At least the seal worked well-if anyone wants some, i can get it from work but i only have a week before i change job!

Cheers for all the help and suggestions

Andy

Perhaps the screen isnt as clean is it looks to be. The chemical washing with Caustic Soda might be worth trying.

Many people use sieves with no problems it would seem.

Hi Bob,

I gave it a good clean with lime and pressure washed. Also slipped it in the dishwasher on a hot wash when Em was out.

Where would i get caustic soda from-will be worth ago! Would love for it to work as the sieve is doing a cracking job apart from the length of time between cleaning!

Not sure on the Caustic Soda Andy, perhaps someon else can help here.

One of those over cleaner products may work well, but pressure washing afterwards would be definitly needed. I guess they must use caustic soda or similar.

Andy, the waste looks like un-digested food .... which could mean that it's not being used by your koi and just being passed to waste....what is your water clarity like?

Just got home and used my mobile to snap a few pics of my screen and conversion ... have a look and see how it compares (waste wise).

Hope it helps .....

Hi Chris,

The water clarity is really good at the moment-you cant see any bits floating around atall. Can i ask what food you are feeding? The waste on your screen looks almost dusty as opposed to the gunk im getting! What is that screen like-ive got one that i meant for a diy project on a rainy day!

Using Cuttlebrook premium for the last year or so ... the 300 micron screen is brilliant, water clarity is excellent - but needs cleaning 1 to 2 times a day ... I also have a 500 micron screen that I use in the winter ... it usually only needs cleaning weekly.

Hi All,

Still no joy with this one! Sieve clogs within 8 hours regardless. Ive cut food down from 8 feeds a day to 2 feeds, the sieve is hardly picking anything up now but simple clogs with a fine layer all along the sieve-it almost works better with more waste!

I gave it a real good clean with caustic soda and gave it a jet wash-made no difference what so ever! I tried adding a wier plate to try and concentrate the flow through the screen but made no difference. I tried running it with a much larger pump and still clogged within 8 hours!

Spoke to Mark at cuttlebrook and he cleans his ones twice a day! Everyone else ive spoken too seems to be able to go much longer before it cloggs up???? Do they sell different micron screens perhaps??????

Any ideas much appreciated!!!

Hi Andy

Been following this thead for a while.

I have no experience of sieves but can say that food and feed rates seem to play a big part in the amount of waste.

My GO set up is a Pod from the BD and shower from a side drain. Prior to changing to probites I was feeding 4 times a day and getting sufficient in the Pod to feel I needed to flush every couple of days. Since changing and spreading the feed to 10 times a day I get no waste in the Pod but still flush every other day..

When I started dropping the temp from 25 in preparation for new arrivals I started to get more waste in the Pod so at 21 changed to autumn mix, immediately waste levels dropped.

Suspect that the answer could be trying different feed.

What temp are you at and how much are you giving them?

Regards

Dave
