A = male as the vent looks concave
B = female as the vent looks convex

does the vent change as they mature?
very hard to distinguish this in a young carp they will probably need to be going into nissai and from then on, for this to be evident , even the experts have a hard time determining sex in tossai and trust me get it wrong loads of times
yes "A" is the male with a round-ish exit
and "B" is the Female always an elongated quite long slot lying at right angles across the trunk of the body
so well done every one even if you got it wrong you hopefully have learned something new

Another taboo subject brought out in the open
I got it wrong, but glad I have finally learnt it, as it appears no matter how many times people have shown me in the flesh its never stuck, so hopefully todays lesson that will stay put

When at Cuttlebrook talking to Mark, he said he sexes by feeling the gill plates, fairly easy at this time of year females have very smooth plates, males rough plates a bit like sandpaper, but in smaller males there is only a very slight roughness.

Yes the gills can be rough a bit like us males with some stubble and also you will sometimes see breeders/dealers looking at the pec and these can have little rough bits going along the leading ray which is also a tell tail sign.
