new pond build

it will be 5' water depth.. the hole is 3' so it will come out the ground a few foot to .. if to high then i will have some sort of decking area to compensate... cant wait ..........

Going to be a nice size pond around 5000gls so plenty of room for fish You may have to dig a bit more as you don't want to forget the base with a bottom drain takes up a bit

You will be OK coming out the ground as mine must be 2-3ft out of the ground and its still standing

So are you going to have one or two bottom drains and how about some filtration on the slimmer...never have to much filtration think about it now while your planing

ive been advised to have two bottom drains and ive bought them now i just need to work out weather to have two filter systems or work something else out..
didnt think of the skimmer filter but good idea.. bloody fish better be greatfull ..lol

You can never have to much filtration

Have you got aerated bottom drain these are the ones which have an air dome on them so you can pump air directly into the pond

i didnt have.. i was going to have two normal bottom drains but have spoken to a few people on here and they all have said go with one airated drain... does this have to be dead central or can it be slightly up one end... im abit worried about the ripples and being able to see the fish........

You can turn the switch off when looking at the fish and then turn it back on when you've finished..thats what i do

Its best to try to get it central but the good thing is the air moves up creating great water movement which helps pull the waste down to the bottom drain

darri , i woudnt put one aerated drain in if you are putting in two bottom drains , i would put two in and stick as much air in as possible thro each , possibly using two spindrifters with a 100 ltrs of air thro each, as gazza has said you can always turn them off or down when veiwing, you cant overfiltrate and you aint gonna worry about thermoclines at that depth , the mass air will assist in driving all the crud to the drains, your fish will be livelier the colours better and they wont be lethargic either.

as for ourselves we run 200ltrs on our 4000gall
100ltrs on our two 1500gall ponds
and 50 ltrs on each of the growing tanks\q\t each about 350 gall
the four indoor ponds all have showers generating more air and three of the five have over the wall returns with a free air gimmick developed by mark d. at ckf...so lots of air ....but hey its only my opinion

thanks for the advise guys ..... im going to go for two bottom drains in case there is ever a problem with one...
like you say the more air the better...

cant wait to enjoy the koi instead of fixing pipework or filters .....

So do you know what and how the filtration is going to work
