Fiberglazing help

Post by mick24 »

Hi all although this is my first post on the site Ive been hovering around on the edge reading the posts so first thing first hi to all from mick from Epsom in Surrey.

I have a 8500 gallon pond which is block and rendered and coated in G4 with 2 bottom drains gravity feed into filter bay.

Last winter the render cracked resulting in water leaking though the gap about 18 feet long, the builder who built it for me came back and after I emptied the pond he chipped out the old render and re rendered the pond, every one happy so far :)

This year following more snow and cold, yep the render has blown again  dropping the level about 6 inches.

So Ive now decided that the best way forward would be to fiberglass the pond once and for all.
Im looking for someone to carry out the job who wont charge me the earth or some one who would help me do the job on my own, im very capable regarding DIY and also whats needed to do the job and were to buy whats needed.

All help gratefully received

All the best
Mick

Hi Mick

If you want to fibreglass I would suggest forgetting about rendering the pond and line it with insulating foam board such as Kingspan. I would recommend getting someone in to fibreglass a pond of that size. It won't cost you that much more to hire someone to do a really professional job than it would for you to buy the materials (East Coast fibreglass sell pond kits including CSM, tissue and flowcoat). I fibreglassed a 2K growing on pond which turned out alright but the amount of work and worry (if you get anything wrong it's a nightmare to make good) made me decide never to tackle anything larger.

I'd strongly recommend getting someone who specialises in ponds rather than general fibreglassing. There are several guys who frequent this site who are specialist pond fibreglassers who might be available depending on where you live. I would suggest having a look at the GRP Lining Services website. The only quote I could get locally (I live in the middle of nowhere in Wales) for my pond was ridiculously expensive and the guy was only going to use a single layer of matting.

It might be an idea to put up a picture of the pond so people can get an idea of what's involved. For example if the pond is square the foam line is much more straightforward.

Cheers

Hi Mick

Welcome to KoiQuest mate.

Try sending a PM to Bob Hart, I know he's fibre-glassed a few ponds in his time and he may be able to help you out.

Cheers
