air pumps - 2 x 50l, or 1 x 100l ?

Post by ajb »

Hope you all had a good Easter break.

What are the pro's and con's of using 1 x 100lpm air pump versus 2 x 50lpm air pumps?

I need to put air though a converted bubbling k1 conversion - the air pipes and outlets could easily either be one long structure or 2 half length structures covering the same area as one structure.

if your 100 packs up you have no air, if ONE of your 50's packs up then you'll still have some air

adam, carlejo has hit the nail on the head really, as we hopefully get warmer weather in summer o2 levels in water will drop due to warmer water not being able to retain the desired levels, so if you lose one at least you can still feed o2 hungry bio with at least some o2 till you get the other repaired, the same could be said of twin or multiple fitration systems ,not putting all your eggs in your one basket so to speak..

Check the wattages - two pumps might be a lot less efficient than one larger pump in which case it might make more sense to have one big pump running the system and buy a cheaper, smaller one as a back-up just in case.

ed, according to make of course differentials may occur ,looked quickly at hi blows and 100ltrp\m is 95\100w ..40s at 38watts and 80s at 71 watts, seem pretty comparable on watts to ltrs within reason ,but may not apply to all pumps\makes...so a good point\tip to look at when buying pumps or other electrical equipment round the pond...
