Aquamax solid handling Dry pump, any good ?

Post by Russ Little Pond »

At this time i`m pumping water from 6" under the surface using a Blagdon Amphibious pump now I would like to change to a Aquamax solid handling Dry pump that I will attach to the bottom drain then to vortex or brush chamber, the bottom drain at this time is used to drain water very 3 days and to empty the pond to waste only not connected to filter

My thinking is, as their`s a botton drain fitted it would be better using it as a water out feed rather than putting pump in the pond...

Are Aquamax solid handling Dry pump a good pump for 1000gallons ?

Russ,

I think you`d be better off by connecting your bottom drain directly to your vortex, then connecting to whatever other filter you are thinking of using, THEN, fitting your pump to return the water to the pond.

If you fit the pump straight on to the bottom drain, the first thing you would do is to absolutely mince up all the fish waste into tiny bits, which are a bugger for filters to completely remove.

By going straight to a vortex, all the big bits will settle out in there and not get through to clog up your filter. You flush them to waste when you do your routine water changes.

Hello Chris,

Total forgot about the impeller smashing up the waste and making it smaller.

As for running filters from botton drain... due to pond being totaly inground and filter bank above ground that wont work unless pond or filters get sunken or raised or new pond built :)

Would pumping from bottom drain into a compact Sieve then the filter be a better way of doing it ??

Regards

Russ.

Hi

The Aquamax do run dry but they seem to get very hot and are becoming very unreliable with many simply burning out. Can I recommend you have a look at the new Super Fish range. They look very similar and do they same job for similar wattage and are alot cheaper. Also although they are new out so impossible to say how reliable theyare but they do run cool unlike the aquamax which suggest should be fine.

I have been running the new Super fish pump for a while now, the model i am runnig is 15000, & at only 175 watts, & around 3,300 gallons,i found it very good all rounder, it has a "Thermal Resettable Fuse " ( RTF ) so there is less chance of the pump running dry .The price is good to is you shop around.
