DIY Protein skimmer in vortex chamber

Post by niceshowa »

Hi There,
This is my attempt at a air protein skimmer and it works. The skimmer from the pond is connected to the vortex chamber of the filters and this collects all the floating muck plus all the foam from the pond. The problem was how to harvest the foam and muck. Hopefully the photos are clear enough to see what's happening. There is a 40mm pushfit waste white pipe connected to a 110mm soil waste pipe to form a U shape. The Floating head or collector is a 1.5” Pressure pipe which is cut out at the top so that the water falls into the waste pipe the float is a piece of teak cut out slightly smaller so that it is a tight fit on the pipe. This can then be adjusted by tapping it with a hammer up or down to suite. The different size of the 40mm waste and the pressure pipe allows the pressure pipe to ride up and down on the 40mm waste. The bubble collector is a 5 litre bottle of water from Somerfield with the bottom cut off. The top was drilled for overflow pipe. The height of the bottle above the water is important and needs to be adjusted so that it works. I had to put three large pebbles in the 110mm waste to stop the lot floating with two air stones to create the suction. the bigger bubble the more the suction!!!!! Regards Niceshowa :D :D :D
