Best of luck with your build let me know how you get on.
Kind regards....Martin.
You too. Another thought i had was putting static K1 in the vortex like this (stolen picture ) as well as in the main filter. But at the end of the day its how much less work you want to do on maintainance to the filters and its an expensive price to pay to save a few minutes each week
This maybe of some interest to you as it was to me. I was reading through one of my Koi magazines and came across this article. The question asked was...
Q"I am building an 8,800 gallon Koi pond is there any particular filteration setup ypu could recommend?"
A On a pond this size i would surggest two bottom drains-use each of these to gravity-feed their own filter system so that you end up with two independent filter systems each with their own pump, UV and pond return. If you decide to go down this route you effectively need two filter systems that are capable of filtering 4,000-5,000 gallons of water. I would suggest a vortex of around 30in diameter on each system, followed by another vortex which is set up as a media chamber and which i'd suggest you use japanese matting.
From this matting chamber i would pump into a bead filter, such as the Lacron Bio-Mec 20 and then from here pass the water through a 55W UV before returning back to the pond. This system should be replicated twice, with each one being fed from its own bottom drain. I would also suggest installing a surface skimmer and power this on a separate pump and use it to power another return. on the skimmer return you may want to consider installing some additional filteration such as an Eazy pod or another small bead filter.
This system is what i had in mind but using just one filter system through one bottom drain for a 4000+ pond but have the bottom in a hopper shape so everything falls down to the one drain and i am going to vortex followed with a 3 bay filter with either static K1 or jap matting then moving K1 and jap matting or another bay of moving K1 in the last bay, experimental time there i think, then into a bead filter and if i can try and run a skimmer into the filter too so wont need another pump and filter for a skimmer.
I'm sure the system your planning will work very well. Its similar to what Pete Waddington introduced many years ago.
I think I'm suffering from information overload as far has filtration is concerned. There are many ways to filter a koi pond with most being up to the job. If your happy with your own system & confident with it, that's great, as it comes down to personal preference in the end. I would not won't to install a system that i wasn't happy with.
My earlier comments about the vortex was not my opinion, just feedback I had been given from koi dealers/ keepers. The info they have provided me was that a modern day sieve or a settlement chamber performs better than a vortex.
I wish you well with your build let me know how you get on, I might copy it!
King regards....Martin.
