THE FISH HOUSE IS GO

Post by TerryKoi »

Hi People
Work has commenced converting my old work shop which was to become a summer house but will now become a fish house , and believe it or not it was Sonia's idea . I had nothing to do with the decision , I just sat back and let it happen  :D :D
Anyway I hope to squeeze in a
water storage tank ,
a growing on tank ,
and one or two QT,s.

Firstly Id like to know if any one stores water ready to top up their pond after flushing filters and water changing .
any one had a problem with stored water . I would think best put through a purifier covered kept dark and aerated.
I hope to hold about 800 gls. but as this will weigh nearly 3 1/2 tons I might have to reduce that amount as I am thinking of a narrow tall storage tank, the other option is perhaps some heavy steel work to hold a raised tank reduced in size above part of the G.O.Tank.

I'd also like your thoughts on a good size growing on tank, obviously the bigger the better, what about depth ,temp, and filtration.

and your thoughts regarding what size QT works best, needs to take a large fish against running cost of large volumes of water.

All these tanks are self build so any shape or size is possible as long as it fits within the fish house, which is approx. 15ft X 12ft.

Dave when I spoke to you the last time you and Deb were over the wine was flowing and the girls were so good at extracting the "P" mate I don't remember any of what you said so sorry if you have to repeat it.

Terry,
use an IBC for water storage and fit a 4" tank connector to the bottom with a valtera slide valve. This would alow you to dump up to 220 gal of water with immediate gratification.
I use plenty of them and you can pick em up for about £30 quid. Just site it above your other tanks for ease of filling.

Terry

If your siting the water tank over IMO you'd be better off using a 4inch ball valve.
I used to have 2 valtera slide valves on my pond. Fitted fine but they soon started
to leak buy when closed (made flush of the vortex a hard job)

Hi Phil I did consider the IBC containers but have not found a reasonably priced supplier down south and delivery cost from up north bumps up the price , I also could not find out if you can double stack them when they are full :?:
Herbie I have a few ball valves ready and waiting..

Thanks Mark that's interesting and would you know if you could empty the bottom one first or must they be emptied from the top first, so could you have 1 or even 2 on top of an empty one.

it's actually the framework on the ibc's that take the weight not the plastic tank, But to be on the safe side i would empty from top first

:D :D Hi Bob just keeping my options open and of coarse water for the pond which is unheated would be best kept outside to match temperatures. so IBC,s if I could hide them could be an option .

I don't so much store water as have a large barrel of warm water sitting next to the QT to balance the temperature of the water being replaced to that of the QT itself. It is very important to make sure the water in the QT (which is often heated) is being replaced with water of roughly the same temperature (within ½ a degree or so).

If your storage water is being held at the same temperature as the QT water then the problem is solved. Mixing water is a bit of a headache and takes up more of my time than I wold care to spend.

Hi Scotty
so tell me does your water come through a purifier first and how long is it there for , I mean do you drain it completely or just keep topping it up.
do you add anything to your stored water.

Thanks Terry.

I decided to take the fish house right out to my boundary so the outer wall doubles up as my fence, here's a few pics.

Ideally you would go through the purifier. My personal advantage is that we don't have chlorine in the water so I don't need one. I have a sump pump which I place in the barrel and a hose pipe. I let the water come together in a container that drains directly into the QT and manage the temperature by cutting back the water from the pump. I generally do a 1/4 water change every other day and simply fill the barrel with warm water from the tap. I only need to do this if the water is heated otherwise I just fill the barrel with water and let it come up to QT temperature of the space of time up to the next water change and simply replace the 200 liters that the barrel contains.
