Filter Conversion / Mod part 1

No real update on finishing the filter yet ( 100 other jobs and the fact its xmas ) but i would like some opinions..
Have alook at the first photo..

As you can see the inlet is on the right and it exits via the slot to the left and then down into the next chamber, i plan to use the vortex section as static to catch most the waste and the next two as fluidised K1. I have concerns about keeping the second section free from the majority of the waste when cleaning the vortex section, would i be better off fitting some 3" pipe from the entry and elbow it round to the middle of the vortex and then upwards with a valve fitted so as to isolate the entry ( i will be fitting a valve before the filter also ), i am also thinking that i might need to make a plate to close off the exit to the left when i am flushing..
what do you think...??????
