Postby Gazza » Thu Jul 22, 2010 5:35 pm

Just a quick note of thanks to Mike Snaden Of Yume Koi for coming to give a great talk for the Crouch Valley Koi Club as always very interesting :D :D

The talk was very informative and i am sure has got a few people thinking on a few aspects of koi keeping and even how to pick a koi out with some potential for a bit of growth :D

This was all finished of we a few beers and some grub round at Dave's house and thanks for the hospitality :D

As Gazza pointed out it was a great talk, Thanks Mike.

There was a lot of information packed in and it was fascinating to see the size Mike grows his charges too. I’m not into big Koi but it was interesting to hear Mike explain the various body shapes that will hold the Koi in good stead in being able to grow to Jumbo Koi size, whilst maintain a good overall body shape and pattern quality as well as aspects of water chemistry which are arguably more crucial in achieving consistently good growth year on year. Mike doesn’t feed all year round and doesn’t heat to tropical temperatures to achieve the growth his Koi demonstrate is possible.

Mike explained about how to look for the spine density, the shape of the head and other aspects of the body shape of the koi, all useful tips when looking at Koi for purchase.

Although from Mikes photo’s and Video's you’d be forgiven for thinking Koi only come in one colour variety combination, that being Red and White  it was very interesting to hear Mike’s explanation of how to look at colour and patterns to determine how the Koi might potentially finish. Mike explained how to look for certain aspects of the colour and where it was on the scales in order to give the best chance of long term pattern development and sustainability.

I'm sure if I remember only half of what Mike told us when I am in the excitement of actually buying a Koi then I'm sure the quality of my choices will be better for it. Whether I can afford them is another matter

It was another great evening at the Crouch, with a few members even turning up wearing Yume Koi T’shirts. I was not too sure if these were Mike’s groupies or if they were hoping to get discounts off Mike’s fabulous Koi.

Yup that would be us "Mike S fan club"

Always nice to see Mike and listen to him talk Koi, often at shows there is so much going on that you dont get to have a real chat, so it was great to see him.

Cheers
