Hi Duncan,

Sorry only just seen this.

Houses off the ground is a must, put it up on bricks or blocks if you need to. Take the feeder away at night and when you do put it out, hang it so the chickens can't tip it over. Make sure there is no food left lying about. Cages and traps in pipes so the chickens cannot get caught. Chicken food contains a lot of vitamin k, which is the antidote for rat bait poison, which is why prosions don't seem to work! An air gun makes good sport, most enthusiasts will shoot them for free if you have a real problem!

Terriers love ratting, do you know anyone with a terrier? It's incredible to watch, a good ratter is fast, efficient and happy doing his job!

Xx

Glenn, didn't know you were such an expert on chickens, a man of many talents. ;-)
Jack Russell's are just brilliant, good catchers and dispatched in seconds...more humane than traps or poison IMHO.

Air rifle works well too!

Though Glenn's son and his friend made a rodinator................ (Google or you tube RODINATOR, I am not sure the link will work).

They were like two nutty professors slaving over their invention.......

You mix two gases, fill the runs.............. and ignite.............. BOOM!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gto91AyBy-Y

They started of with 8 seconds of gas, by the time they got experienced they were in the front fields putting 8 MINUTES of gas down one run.

We are on gravel....... the dirt flew in the air 60 foot, they got pelted with stones and look like they'd been pebble dashed! The bloody earth shook, I couldn't stop laughing!

Then Glenn's prized border got the treatment, as a rat lived under the timber surrounds....... BOOM! it moved the timber around the border and some dried leaves caught fire, so the pair of them jumped up on Glenn's prized border and started stamping the fire out.

But it did get rid of the rats..........
