Hi Andy

Looking good

Matt glassed our pond did a great job, he advised us to use 1" Polyureathene foam. Easily fixed to the walls and base with splodges of car body filler. No problem with curves.. Only takes a few hours.

Not cheap but saves rendering.

Hi All,

Thought id better drag this post up from the past! Ive managed a little progress over the last few months, have been a bit distracted trying to sort out front garden along the way.

Two 2inch returns (for filters) and two 4inch returns (for showers). Electric supply and water line fitted in place ready for skimmer in bottom right hand corner.

The start of the filter bay

The last of the block work (just face brickwork required now)

Planting areas back filled ready for topsoil and some plants

Filter house awaiting face brickwork

This is as far as things got before i was diverted to the front garden

Before

After

Ive managed to source the glass for a curved window, i wanted a 10ft long window curved but it was over £2000 so im going to opt for two 5ft curved windows with a pillar in the middle. Hopefully i might be able to get some face work done soon once ive saved up enough pennies!

Ive modified two skimmers to 4inch returns to gravity feed to sieves before going over a pair of showers. I also fitted wide mouth extensions and grills ready for fitting next weekend.

Just need some nice weather and a lottery win and it will be done in no time!

Hi All,

Once again dragging this one up from the past! Since my last post everything filtration wise has changed! Following a massive electricity bill i realised the cost of electricity and had a rethink-inspired by Janes air uplift run pond!

Ive sold both Nexus 300's, ultra sieve and most of my aquamax pumps. I played around with air uplifts and found i can easily move 20,000ltrs an hour using just a 40 watt air pump so have moved down this route.

Basically my filter now consists of two identical block built filters side by side, one fed by a 4inch gravity fed skimmer and one by the 4inch gravity fed bottom drain. The first chamber on both is static followed by a large fluidised k1 chamber, they will then both be pumped via uplift pipes to a common chamber which will gravity feed the water back to the pond via two 4 inch returns.

I have a second skimmer in the front R/H corner of the pond which will feed a bakki shower and the uv (this may be switched off in the winter) I also have the option of pumping from the main folter as well to the bakki shower for added flow and turnover in summer.

I have two spare 4inch returns and two spare 2inch returns built into the pond so i have plenty of options for other filtration etc.

I fitted the two skimmers and all the four inch pipework today but it pee'd it down before i was finished so didnt get any pics!

The front face wall was built on saturday, there is still two courses required over the windows(waiting for stainlesss steel lintels to be made as wall is curved) Basically Dave (Builder) will need one day to fit lintel and finish all block work and another day for rendering and im ready for glassing :D Hopefully i can have the filters finished and ready befor ethen so there is no hold up and im away!

Any thoughts suggestions more than welcome :D

Hi Bob,

Hopefully not to long now-its been long enough as it is!

Hi gaz,

Had thought about kingspan but we dont have gas and i dint think i will ever be able to afford to heat any other way. I suppose it would still help if unheated? The other thing that puts me off is how to attach the kingspan-i ended up having to drill and screw the kingspan on my qt and fill holes!
Cheers for picking shower up for me-hope you guys had a good day-hopefully next time i can join you as i will have an empty pond to fill with fish!

Andy

Hi Andy,

You just stick the kingspan with gripfill stuff and then just glass over it and fill with water and it will help keep the pond warmer weather heated or not :D

Looking good mate and Your man has done a nice neat job, I hate to say it though, it may be fingers crossed time when filling, a 225mmx900mm pier between those two windows is a big ask, especially on that radius. What lintels are You using? Are YOu having something cast to run the radius? Or laying straight over the top square ?

Hi Gazza,
Will see if i can find a job lot of kingspan

Hi Amanda,
Hopefully wont be long now

Hi Justin,
Think the plan is for a rounded lintel to match the radius which will tie all the walls together. I know it will have angle welded for strength. The pier in the middle had lots of wall ties in to keep it together. The windows look massive but they are less thatn 4 foot wide(i think) Do you think it will be ok (got me worried now!) With the glass i looked on pilkingtons website, it said i need 15mm for a window like this-do you know if it is annealed glass or hardened glass i will need as it didnt say?

Cheers Andy

Hi Andy sorry mate its not about how many wall ties You have used, its the size of the pier. If You stood in Your pond now You would be able to push it over quiet simply,There is no weight to it, and as it is going with the radius I would say a weak point. OK I know its going to have lintels over the top, but from what I can see You will only have 325mm of blockwork to go over the top, this will not prevent You lintel from slipping as the weight of water push`s against the wall. I would suggest One continuous T piece steel spanning the entire radius, then chemical fix the steel at all lintel bearing points.
Ok You could build it and it sit there for years, for Me I dont think its strong enough.
Another way to of tackled this would of been to of had a cavity between both skins then mass filled with concrete. You could of done this to the whole radius to add strength to the pier the curve and pulled all the work together.
I just dont want to see You do it and end in tears
Justin
Another little thing to be aware of is You have 325mm of blockwork, that does not work brickwork, four course of bricks is 300mm so things are going to be 25mm a drift

Hi All,

Thought id better drag this one up from the past! Progress has been a bit slow to say the least, somebody decided to spend all my money on a wedding  Anyway got back from honeymoon late Friday-was up at crack of dawn Saturday morning to get cracking on the pond :D Big thankyou to Stu for popping in while we were away to flush filters and check on fish! :D

Before we went away i had a long wait for the lintel to be delivered. The front wall had 10 one metre long steel reinforcement bars fitted and chemically bonded together . The lintel had been chemically bonded to the side walls and front pier along with bolts.

Yesterday morning the front facing wall was finished along with most of the front filter bay wall. The block built filter was nearly all completed (couldnt finish as i hadn't fitted some pipes that need installing before blockwork is finished) Im planning on finishing filter one evening this week so its ready for rendering the weekend after next :D
