New Year, new Project!

Postby Bob Hart » Mon Mar 26, 2007 8:03 pm

Remember last year when I converted my Vortex to a big Easy? Well it's about to get ripped out along with a few walls.

It doesnt like the throughput of 5000+ gallons/hour and the grid gets blocked under the K1. This occurs with blanket weed and is a real pain and has been for a few weeks now. The K1 can also block if left for more than 3-4 days in the Summer.

The drilling of those 4 x 6" holes and fitting of the new cone etc.

The area you can see here is to be totally knocked out and made into a large settlement area.

The blue line walls will be coming out

Got a few strong boys coming along on Saturday

Settlement chamber? and i thought you were a "technology person"

so Bob are you shying away from technology and going back to the good old fashioned way of filtering water?
OR
are you making this settlement chamber with a difference?

Question:- how will the flushing of such a large volume of water effect your water perameters?

Well over the past 12-years of this pond I've had many ways of getting the solids out. All have worked with limitations, so I'm onto the next option.

What I'm going to do is what the ****** boys do. A large flat bottomed settlement chamber. To clean it will mean hoovering, but I will be building a hoover pipe into the wall, with the pump back in the shed permanently plumbed in.

I'll be monitoring parameters as always and be interesting to see if ORP goes up. Some of the ****** boys dont hoover for a couple of months, but none of them seem to monitor water parameters either. Still they have healthy Koi, so something must work. Many of them chuck in loads of clay, not something I'm aiming to do.

Pictures at the weekend of the crew at work!!!!

so youll be building a special "Bobbed hoover head" for the filter bay.
a nice slotted piece of pipe that spans across the filter bay with a connector for your vacuum glued in the middle. add to this a nice little remote for the on/off switch. a click on the remote and one pass across the filter and your done.

Yeah automatically motor driven hoover, that sounds good! Dont think my chamber is quite the right shape for that, but another thought to store - thanks

no, not motor driven... hand driven but a hoover head that fits nicely across the bottom of the filter bay. you just would turn it on at one end and slide it slowly to the other end and then turn it off. least disturbance to the matter settled on the bottom.

Been a very busy day today, but a lot accomplished.

Firstly my thanks to Gazza, Des, Justin, Danny and Shaun, who all gave up a day of their own time to assist me with another project.

Still a bit for me to do as the pictures will show.

This was what we started with

Gazza grinding off some of the fibreglass

Des, Shaun Danny and Justin hard at it

Another block successfully removed!

At the end of the day this is what the 'hole' now looks like
