summer and it's effects on readings

Post by chita »

Hi Gazza and Bob, (feel free to jump in anyone with an ORP meter) has your ORP fallen somewhat over the last few weeks? Mine has dropped from 395 to 350 over the last few weeks due to increased temps.

A word of warning, watch any replacement restrictors you get from RO man, doesn't matter what you order you get what they have! Additionally they appear to stock more than one make, both of which produce different results. If you complain you get told that all such products have a 10% latitude, notwithstanding the fact you have just advised them of a 30% difference!

Does anyone have problems with the seals on the prefilter pods, or am I just heavy handed?

The above aside, is everyone happy with the results of RO and or the high ORP quest at this point?

Summer is they assure me around the corner, so we need to document any changes we see as a result. Publicising any such here will save hours of anguish for new adaptors of the technologies.

I see that Koi Carp Magazine has been reading our posts, lots of new articles this month and some of them more advanced, not to mention interesting and of use.

Hi Chi,

Do you really want to know if i have had any changes to reading????????????????????????????????

You better be sitting down your going to love this one

I was away for the week and due to my parents not being able to pop round due to illness (operations & Such) the pond had to go stand alone and it all went pair shaped and too long to explain full

The basics are the mains water auto top up was left on just in case no RO due to overflow not fitted yet.....yes i know my fault  I was going to put brushes in my first chamber and remove the static K1....but the brushes never turned up and i could not get hold of any so out come the K1 and off i went.

So on return ORP 297,TDS 520,PH 8.5

When i left ORP 385,TDS 120,PH 7.2

Now ORP 330,TDS 460,PH 8.1

I wonder what mods i will be doing this year

Oh dear, I wish I'd read another page of the mag instead of raising this issue! Sorry Gazza, but at least now you have the justification for realigning your priority charts so that they more accurately reflect the needs of your fish! I'm surprised someone with your penchant for measurement and analysis got your priorities so wrong!

I cant help you much either Chi, my filter is currently off-line.

I recently installed one of those minitors direct cheapy ORP meters and also changed the probe on my Pinpoint meter. Both were reading around 305 just prior to last Saturday when I took the filter off-line to make some changes.

But t hadent been going down, just stable at roughly 300.

Thanks Bob, just trying to let folk see if readings are pond specific or general in these situations, hope it all comes together soon Bob. I hope it's nothing serious and if there's anything one can do to help do ask.

Where did you get the probe and can I ask how much?

Chi,

I bought the new probe from Monitors direct as well as selling their own unit, they also sell new probes or the Pinpoint meters - http://monitors-direct.co.uk/index.asp?func ... oductid=14

Hi guys

Just wanted to add my 2 pence its winter here in Aus, water is actuallydown to 14 degrees, lots of rain lately so haven been running the RO for a while.

Tap water is around 130 to 150ppm, with around 1.5dH of kH and gH, so i tend to be quite happy with even running mains water just through a carbon and a sediment block.

Mains water here has chloramine in it bit of a bummer. Probably start using RO mix again about 4 to 6 weeks before temps hit 25 degrees to get the water down to about 75 to 80ppm. I usually add a bit more sodium bicarbonate and some clay as well.

Reading what you guys have done with your ROs is way beyond me, I still rely on domestic membranes just of the tap (pressure is good enough not the best), 4 linked in sequential order.

I should would like to learn how to setup an auto top up of RO from you guys a little later.

Any of you guys read on koi chat about how some people have added a shower and their pH has gone from 8 to 9, just from added oxygen, you guys experience it?

Any of you guys try the EA filter that can reduce tds to zero using ion exchange technology is it more cost effective than running RO?

From what I can see they've been around for years, de-ionisation is not exactly new technology. From what I recall of my early research a few years ago it has it's downside in a koi pond, but the good obviously outweighs the bad.

The only way to properly do the job of water purification is RO IMHO.

The PH rise is probably down to changes in the carbon dioxide assimilation and dispersal due to the increase in dissolved Oxygen created by showers.

Bob, how are you finding the new probe? Does it appear to read accurately relative to your previous experience with the Pinpoint device?

If so I will order one to try
