Fish flashing lots

Postby Brek » Wed Jul 28, 2010 11:07 pm

Today they are flashing like mad, took three out and scraped, all found was one immobile gill fluke, so presume dead, they had not flashed since I fluke m'd the pond a few months ago, been fine since then, kinda freaking out as not found anything through scrapes, water params are: ammonia 0.01, nitrite 0.1, PH 7.5, temp 19 deg cel, trickle in water changes 30% per week, checked slides at 100x 200x and finally 400x, nowt moving, any ideas on next step?

Hi brek have you changed water recently as the water boards some times put more stuff in to combat the bacteria because of the hot spell especially at weekend because more is used.
I have been changeing mine but have added chlor go as well as the purifier just to make sure.
Just an idea.

Ahh, very interesting observation amanda, I did a 20% water change the day before treated with sodium thiosulphate first, and noticed it is also coinciding with feeding, woke up this am and no flashing at all, fed tonight and the big chagoi is flashing intermittently. Do they stick more chlorine in then?

Hi brek.
Yes they do at weekends especially as more people are at home and using more water.
May be wrong but if they have settled down now the water change might have been the reason for them to be uncomfortable for a while.

If they are only flashing after feeding I would not be overly worried as they often do this to clear the gills from any irritants which have occurred from eating. If this is the only time I would be unconcerned if it is other times then get a water report or do more scrapes.

to be honest i tend to think you have some more scrapes to do least for now.

i know water boards are allowed to shock the system with whats know as shock chlorine , but they use a very high dose but fast acting and very fast decaying chlorine, in theory at least thats not supposed to reach the consumer we know mistakes can happen but its more than there company is worth to allow it to reach the taps for safe drinking water but it may have killed a few things on the way down the pipes and thats what your koi are reacting to again unlikely but possible

so what imn saying if it looks, walks and talks like a duck, its usually a duck.. get scraping mate

Thankyou for everyones input, much appreciated to get your opinions, the mrs watched them for a long time over yesterday and no flashing, and today none at all, back to normal, Duncan, if there was any more flashing, would have had some more out, but as not, think will just monitor for the time being, (netting stresses me more than the fish) P.S. here is a video of them before and after feeding, seems to be food related,

Treated for gill flukes as found a few live ones on one of the others I scraped the day after my last post, did a 1.5ppm PP, and followed up with a dose of fluke m 4 days later. No water change until next sat, and will rescrape then.
