Detatched Eye

Postby StuW » Wed Jul 21, 2010 6:24 pm

A friends fish appears to have an eye that has popped out of the eye socket, still rotates fully and no damage apparent to the eye or surounding tissue. Is there a correct angle to push the eye back to relocate it into the socket. I tried a variety of angles but was worried I could rupture the eye ball if I pressed too hard in the wrong direction. Any body withy first hand experience who can give some specific advice???
Thanks

Hi mate.

Has the eye actually popped out, which I have never seen before!!
Or is it just bulging?
A picture would be good.
I'd certainly leave it alone until you get further advice!

Kind Regards

Stu, it looks like pop eye to me ... and you can't just pop the eye back in. The eye is distended because of fluid/swelling behind the eye.

popeye is not the problem, but rather a symptom of something else going on in the koi. It could be bacterial, organ failure or dropsy (to name a few common ones). On a rare occassion it could be because of trauma to the eye, but to be honest I cant see anything in the piccy.

Course of treatment is dependent on what's causing the popeye ... so you need to identify other symptoms/pond conditions.

ps.. a shotgun approach (in the short term whilst you investigate) could be, salt at 0.5 ozs per gallon and heat in excess of 20°C in a QT

Hi Chris, thats the problem, I relly cant see any other problem as all parameters are as normal as I would expect, no ammonia or nitrite problems, nitrate ok, PH stable and as far nas I know no treatments have been administered to the pond.
I must admit I would have expected both eyes to be popped out if it was bacterial and some signs of inflamation or trauma in or around the eye.
I really am at a loss on how to proceed here as I, like you, do not like doing random treatments without really kinowing the problem.
Any ideas how I can proceed from here.

Stu, being doing a little research ... popeye when only one eye, tends to be a bacterial kidney infection. maybe Dunc can elaborate, but thats the depth of my knowledge.

Good luck

Stu it may be a result of some kind of trauma and that the eye is just bruised, if there is no other sign maybe if you just give it some time it will correct itself.
I take it its the only fish with any problems in the pond? Does the eye move normally in its socket when its swimming about.?

hi Stu

this looks bacterial to me, the fact the swelling is on one side is nothing unusual it depends on many things. theer is swelling going on usually due to fluid build up sometimes both the eyes protrude but if the eye is weaker more on one side then the other that will give first

if it were mine i would start with a series of broad spectrum antibiotic injections then tight up if it does not respond thats all you have mate
