Fry progress

Post by Davej »

5 weeks on.

Going Ok, had a problem at the end of week 2 , I was losing the fry at an alarming rate. Water parameters were Ok, I think it was sown to sheear weight of numbers, thinned them down a bit and casualties stopped.

Now feeding on a mix of powder and baby brine 3 times a day

Few pics, in the last one is Godzilla he's about 50mm, haven't yet caught him in the act of eating his brother and sisters but think we need to separate him!

Hi Dave

Was this a Showa spawning and I see what you mean about the big fella, I am not sure but I don't think these type of bigger fish are kept but don't quote me on that one prehap's someone else might be able to help you with that. But your babies certainly do look good.

Reduced down to between 250 to 300, not an easy job. They currently have 400 gallons to play in which is probably not enough.

Flock spawning; Mums were a Shiro Utsuri and a Kujaka, it's a very mixed bag.

Hopefully in another few weeks we will be able to make some more better judgements on what each one may be!

Hannibal is destined for the growing on tank with the bigger fish if he get's caught in the act!

Hi Dave

I forgot to say they look lovely, it is such a great feeling watching them develope and grow, I have a Shiro Muji in my pond which I was lucky enough to of had the opertunity to rear from a couple of week's old he is perfect in every way except he is white with one tiny black dot on the dorsal fin which I think is a shimmie, although he came from a Shiro Utsuri spawning, if he is a Shiro Utsuri he is a poor excuse for one

Please keep the pictures coming as it is lovely to see them develope along with you

Few more photos at 9 weeks, couple of reasonable Kohaku prospects, :D the grey and black fish in the photos started off as jet black but are losing the black for grey, I am looking forward to see how they develop; I'm thinking Utsuri or Showa?? :?

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave

How weird you have posted an update I was going to ask you on here last week how they were doing.

Well from the photos they are doing just fine, and they all look to be in perfect health how is the big one doing, did you manage to catch him and move him or is he still with the others.

They look really good

Thanks for your interest

Godzilla has gone into the growing on tank, he's already bigger than a couple of "escapees" from last years fry that reside there with the "proper" fish and seems to be adjusting well to a non fish diet!!! :D

Best fish of all would have been a four step Kohaku, only flaw being the middle steps are down one side ; that's life for you.

What are the guesses for the black , now black and grey fish? :? Think I can detect a smudge of hi coming through , but maybe wishful thinking.

Currently working on a Blue Peter auto feeder that feeds micro pellets without jamming, :? :? would be great to have a lie in... :D

Regards

Hi Dave

I am glad Godzilla is doing ok, he might of been a bit naughty to get to the size he did ut you can't help but love him, he is a fighter and it happens in the wild so he was only doing what comes naturally.

As to the black, grey, white babies I would go for Utsuris, but if you have Uturis you never know there maybe a showa waiting to surprise you, when I was lucky enough to rear some Utsuri fry I had one who had a patch of hi right in the middle of her back, but that was the only hi that came out in any of them, and it took a while for it to show up so you never know :D
