Re: Baytryl

This is interesting. For £20 (including P&P) it makes a good contingency stock item. Greg - if your vet has baytril as a "non-stock" item then what's the current injectable in favour for cats/dogs? 4 years ago it was certainly baytril for cat infections at my vets. Interested to see wh...

Re: Streamflow ponds???

Hi Ed I'm a bit confused by the diagrams. Most streamflows I have seen are taking their water inputs to the shower from side drains at the opposite end of the pond, then pumping over the shower (in most cases via dry pumps but the revision to a wet chamber looks much better with the pump efficiency ...

Re: Koi ID?

It's somewhere between the two in my opinion!

Looks most like an utsuri with kage, but then look at its fins - it has mostly tejima fins.

If I had to force myself then I'd go with an utsuri.

Re: Differing topical treatments and their uses??

Pretty much the same. Gentian Violet for aroud the fins and mouth, but after using cauteriser (or HP). Iodine for scale damage that isn't clearing up itself (I'm definitely in the "leave alone" camp now-a-days that I have confidence in the pond systems themselves) but after a good clean up...

Re: Streamflow ponds???

Bob All seems positives to me. If I were to move then I'd probably go this route. Issues/challenges: 1/ I hear you need to get the benching angle spot on, and it needs to be a smooth finish. 2/ Your ponds design is limited to some particular dimensions I know Stuart's streamflow is on the Koi UK for...

Re: Bowling Stress

Greg I sort of ruled out (c) as the koi was never knocked out and was swimming fine some time later. Stress reaction remains in play. The comment on eggs/spawning from Chris may have relevance. She was the only koi signficantly carrying weight/eggs in the pond. The other comment I'd make is that a n...

Bowling Stress

Last weekend I have to admit I was a little bored, so I broke one of my normal rules and bowled a few koi just to get a new picture and measure them. I would normally never do this. One was a 78cm kohaku which went calmly into the net, calmly into the sock, calmly into the bowl, and calmy back in th...

Re: A Riddle

I'll guess something to do with the gills just to make it interesting.

So looking for something that is "unlatched but down when open but latched/unopenable when closed"?

Re: What would you do?

Not that hard to get a reasonable estimate of a typically sized pond in about 10 minutes of basic measurements and calculations. So pretty sure you could get within +/- 20% within this time. Most treatments have massive thresholds. So, providing the pH is reasonable, then wouldn't be too fused.... b...

Re: Death of a fish !!

Never really thought about it.... my standard procedure as per T2P has been to leave the koi in phenoxytol overnight, which I've always assumed was satisfactory.

Re: Different Methods....

Assuming you are a starting point of a good clean pond, rather than try and take remedial action on a problem or a problem pond, to answer the questions in reverse order: To keep count low: A) very effective mechanical filtration to exit waste at earliest and quickest possibility B) No means of buil...

Re: Different Methods....

Very low bacterial count water, meaning that you only have to treat IF the koi can't recover itself. Which then means avoiding rushing in.

Then if something serious, once stable, into very warm water for rapdi regneration and no messing around.

Re: Regime When Treating A Pond

I shove a big air pump on attached to a portable diffuser into the pond. [Should point at that there's only 40lpm of air in the pond by default]

I don't have the UV switched on so a moot point.

I never by-pass the filter.

I do the treatment in the early morning if at all possible.
