Re: What good is GH?
As Mark says, we are just trying to better understand Koi and water keeping, there is no obsession here. Duncan once said that in order to prevent pH crashes then KH must always be higher than GH and as we all know KH is used up by the biological filter. GH can even be as low as zero but we must fin...

Re: Heat Pumps again frozen condensation !
Hi Peter, Well although its now warmed up again I did have a cold spell of 10 days with fog everyday, a heat pumps nightmare. The results of the tray heating kit are mixed. :? I taped the heating element with aluminum tape, as shown on the instructions, to the bottom of the tray next to the heat exc...

Re: Heat Pumps again frozen condensation !
Hi Peter, Free hot air central heating for the pond eh, sounds good. The wiring instructions with the heating kit say to wire the kit directly to a 230V supply but this would mean that it switches on independent of the heat pump. Your solution of recalibrating the thermostat is a good solution and o...

Re: Heat Pumps again frozen condensation !
Hi Peter, I wired it in series with the flow control of the heat pump. The heat pump is set to run at a higher temperature as you say. At the minute I'm waiting for the weather to change (not really in a hurry) to test the drain heater. For the time being I've wired it to the external pump output fr...

Re: Heat Pumps again frozen condensation !
Dave the pond is covered with double layer polycarb. Peter I hoped it would be Peter or it would mean that mine is not so good. I have a 7kw unit from David and for a difference of +9°C then I have an average consummation of 9.99kw for 24hrs. Note that the difference can be from any actual average ...

Re: Foods.................Again
I feed Nutrikoi wheat germ all year round.
Reasons:- the Koi like it
Minimum waste
What seems like reasonable growth, though this is of course impossible to control
Pond contains a mixture of Koi from Tosai to older 70cms jewels

Re: Food and amounts
Maybe this is something as a group we can develop the same as the "pond software" and put into the open as a tool to use. If we could link it up with a RELIABLE chart as a length to weight calculator too then people wouldn't need to pull all their koi out and weigh them etc to get into th...

Re: Food and amounts
I basically follow the same system as Tom, I use an Excel Spreadsheet that I have made myself following Internet research. Although I don't weight the food every day, I do use the same scoop to feed which holds roughly 35grams of the current food used. Apparently I can't upload the Excel file so her...

Re: Stagnant water
I had a bad experience about 10 years ago. Thought I'd heat the pond with free heat from the sun. Laided a 35mm black water pipe out in the sun and on sunny days switched on the pump which indeed heated the water up a treat. No sun for 5 days and then switched pump on the 6th day. It must of pumped ...

Re: Anoxic Filtration
Hi Peter I've read Syd's site with great interest. I was the one responsible for emptying some Tesco's sites in Surrey late last year and am hoping to do the same on my visit to the UK this coming weekend. My plan is to place a sieve before the Anoxic Filter to remove the larger waste and then have ...

Anoxic Filtration
I’m very interested in Dr. Novak’s Anoxic Filtration system theory and would be interested to hear members thought’s on it. Have any of you built one? I intend to try it myself and will try and document the pond readings as I go forward if this is of interest to members. Your thoughts would be appre...
