Re: Jon's pond build

Hi Glenn Thanks for that. It gives me some hope that I rectify things without having to ship in 30-40 tons of hardcore. The sump sounds a good idea. Sorry to sound a bit thick but what are "sleeper walls"? And what sort of depth did you have for the concrete base? I was thinking that I cou...

Re: Jon's pond build

Hi Yorkie Reason I want to raise the level by 4-5 feet is because there was a bit of a cock up and the area for the filter has been dug nearly as deep as the pond. Given that the pond will be nearly 7 feet deep with 2 foot above ground it means the filter room will be 6 foot deep at water level. Not...

Re: Jon's pond build

Hi Yorkie Thanks very much for the reply. To what depth do you think I can use sand to raise the level? Having done some more measurements I'm looking at possibly 4 feet! Re water ingress; there is some, so I was planning on having a continuous sheet of visqueen up the walls to ground level. I've go...

Re: Ed's pond build

Hi Ed

I see what you mean about the manhole cover. Do you think it might be possible to dig around it and accept that the pond wouldn't be a perfect rectangle?

Cheers

Re: Jon's pond build

Hi Ed I think you may be right. I have distributed about 120 tons of red shale which makes pretty good hardcore all round a field so I have got the material - it will just mean another day hiring a digger and dumper. What I'm not sure about is exactly how to go about consolidating it properly. I cou...

Re: New pond design

Hi Ed

Can you post up a pic showing where you want to put the growing on pond and the offending manhole cover - someone might come up with solution.

Cheers

Re: Jon's pond build

Hi Gazza The far end of the hole in the picture is where the filter house should be. It's been dug down 5 foot when it probably should only be about 2'-2'6". What I wonder is how best to go about filling it back in. If I tip a load of shale back down that end it's going to take a while to settl...

Jon's pond build

Hi Guys Need a bit of advice re preparing to lay concrete base. The whole has been dug as deep as possible (5'-6'). http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/dsp2416/Pond%20Build/DSC_0322.jpg The substrate is red shale and pretty hard - couldn't go down any further with an 8-ton digger.I have the foll...

Re: New pond design

Hi Ed Talked to Darren at A4Koi who uses showers on his main pond. His preferred method for returns is to have spigots in the bottom tray of the shower which are attached to the return pipework. The bottom tray is 3 ft above water level and the returns are no more than 2ft below water level. He reck...

Re: New pond design

Hi Ed Living out here is very much swings and roundabouts - lots of peace and quiet but can't get a decent Chinese takeaway! Here is the finished dig; http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/dsp2416/Pond%20Build/DSC_0322.jpg Only problem is I think I've dug too deep for the filter room by about 3'. ...

Re: New pond design

Hi Ed The dig also includes the filter house so it won't all be pond! Couldn't afford to run anything that big. Should be 20' x 10' x 6'-7' sloped depth. I've left about 20' for the filter house. I live out in the middle of nowwhere so the one thing I've got is lots of garden - 3 acres in total. Sit...

Re: New pond design

Hi Ed Here is a Gunnera that I have at the end of my current pond waste pipe. http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/dsp2416/Pond%20Build/DSC_0249.jpg It was a small lump of unpromising root when I put it in 3 years ago. It's now over 8 foot tall. Here's the site for the pond; http://i214.photobuck...

Re: New pond design

Hi Ed I really hope it does work - because I'm thinking of doing the same. I heard of people having the returns down about 12" under the waterline but not necessarily with a streamflow design. I did think of putting in a couple of bottom drains as well but I think these would either impair the ...

Re: New pond design

Hi Ed Do you know anyone else who has used pipes straight from the bakki without a pump? When I've looked at all the other examples of streamflow ponds they also seem to have returns at the base of the pond which are powered by pumps and using 1 1/2" or 2" pipework to ensure sufficient flo...

Re: New pond design

Hi Ed 1. My concern was that water would back up and overflow from the returns because of pressure from water at the bottom of the pond reducing the flow through the pipes. I wondered given the sheer volume of water being returned whether it would be effective to have the return at surface level rai...
